Alhamdulillah, we are deeply honoured to receive the PAM Award Silver 2026 under Category 2: Multiple Residential Low Rise for the AKSEM Quarters project.

This recognition reflects the collective effort, commitment, and dedication of our team at Arkitek FAA Sdn Bhd, together with the trust and support of our clients, Kementerian Dalam Negeri (KDN) and Jabatan Kerja Raya (JKR), as well as the collaboration of all consultants, contractors, and project stakeholders.

We are truly grateful for this blessing and humbled by the recognition from Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia (PAM).

May Allah place barakah in this achievement and guide us to continue designing architecture that serves people, communities, and the nation.

Design with Beauty. Build in Truth.

The AKSEM project in Padang Besar challenged us to rethink how housing could be delivered faster, better, and more efficiently in a remote location.

Working closely with JKR, we explored a range of construction methods, including large-scale 3D concrete printing using technology supplied by COBOD. Several units within the 125-unit development were identified as pilot projects. if successful they were supposed to be implemented in all other jkr projects .While the technology showed promise, the quality of the printed finish did not achieve the standards required for the project.

Innovation, however, is not about adopting the newest technology. It is about selecting the most appropriate solution.

We ultimately adopted a load-bearing masonry concrete block system based on IBS principles. The system eliminated the need for conventional columns and beams in much of the development, reducing construction sequences and accelerating progress on site.

Every block, reinforcement bar, lintel, stiffener services, conduit and ducting had to be carefully planned in advance. Concrete was poured into selected cavities within the blocks, creating an integrated structural system that was both efficient and robust. The blocks also offered lower porosity than traditional bricks, reducing the risk of water pe*******on and mould growth.

For us, this project reinforces a simple principle: every project deserves its own solution. The most successful outcome is rarely determined by the newest technology, but by the careful evaluation of available options and the disciplined selection of what works best for the client, the site and the long-term performance of the building.

Perlis has a climate unlike much of Malaysia.

It is hot, dry, and exposed. At night, the air cools quickly. The landscape carries this condition visibly — in the paler grasses, the bleached leaves, and the muted tones of vegetation. It is a different green from the saturated landscapes found further south, closer to the equator.

The architecture responds by making shade first.

Verandahs are used throughout the buildings, not as decorative additions, but as environmental devices. They hold the sun away from the wall. They create a threshold between exterior heat and internal comfort. They allow the building to breathe before the room begins.

The government quarters are planned on long, narrow footprints, with openings on both sides. This simple arrangement allows air to pass through the building, reducing heat build-up and improving comfort for the occupants.

In this climate, architecture does not need to shout.

It only needs to understand the sun, the air, and the ground beneath it.

There is a quiet satisfaction in designing simple buildings well.

Not every project needs to search for spectacle. Sometimes architecture becomes more meaningful when it is reduced to proportion, repetition, material, and light.

The Kedai Koperasi at AKSEM was approached in this spirit. A modest building assembled through straightforward construction logic — brick, steel columns, roof trusses, concrete blocks, gutters, downpipes. Ordinary elements, carefully aligned.

The brick module establishes the rhythm. The truss spacing informs the proportion of the façade. The fluted concrete blocks catch changing shadows throughout the day.The rainwater downpipe aligns directly with the steel columns, becoming part of the elevation rather than something concealed.

Simple repetition begins to produce order.Order begins to produce calm.

In many ways, projects like these remind us that architecture is still fundamentally tectonic. It is about how things meet, how they weather, how they stand, and how scale is understood by the body.

The pleasure comes not from excess, but from restraint .allowing construction, proportion, and material honesty to quietly carry the architecture.
