The School of Architecture and Built Environment (SABE), UCSI University, is proud to be part of the Third International Conference on Kuala Sepetang, organised in conjunction with World Mangrove Day.
Jointly organised by UCSI University, NetsEco and Look Port Weld (看见十八丁), the conference brought together academics and researchers from Malaysia, China, South Korea, Indonesia, Taiwan, Hong Kong and other regions, alongside policymakers, industry representatives and local communities.
This international gathering provided a valuable platform for exchanging knowledge and exploring Kuala Sepetang as a living model of sustainable development, where mangrove conservation, traditional charcoal production, cultural heritage and community livelihoods have coexisted for more than 120 years.
The conference was officiated by YB Tuan Syed Ibrahim Syed Noh, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, who emphasised that meaningful sustainability must be people-centred—protecting the natural environment while supporting livelihoods, economic development and the well-being of future generations.
The unique relationship between people, place, culture and nature in Kuala Sepetang offers important lessons for architects, planners, designers and built-environment professionals from around the world.
Through international academic exchange, community-engaged research and cross-sector collaboration, SABE remains committed to advancing approaches that respond meaningfully to local knowledge, environmental sustainability and community resilience.
