🍀Entrepreneurial Bricolage: Making More with What We Have

Entrepreneurial bricolage (EB) is essentially about “making something out of nothing”—finding ways to create value by creatively using the resources already available (Wang et al., 2021). This idea is particularly important for SMEs because they often face limited resources, financial constraints, and challenging institutional environments. Instead of waiting for perfect conditions or additional resources, entrepreneurs focus on what they already have and find new ways to make it work.

What makes bricolage interesting is that resources are not limited to money, equipment, or physical assets. Knowledge, relationships, networks, employee ideas, and business connections can also become valuable resources. Entrepreneurs can combine underutilised resources, connect different sources of knowledge, and experiment with new combinations to solve problems and create opportunities. Through this process, bricolage can strengthen creativity, knowledge development, and innovation, including frugal innovation (FI) (Iqbal et al., 2022).

Another important aspect is the role of people. Entrepreneurial bricolage encourages employees and stakeholders to communicate, exchange knowledge, and contribute their ideas. When employees feel comfortable sharing their knowledge and taking initiative, organisations can create a stronger environment for collaboration, learning, experimentation, and problem-solving (Abukari et al., 2024).
In my view, entrepreneurial bricolage is not simply about doing more with less; it is about thinking differently about what we already have. A limited budget does not always mean limited possibilities. Sometimes, innovation starts when entrepreneurs look at existing resources from a different perspective and ask: “How can I combine what I already have to create something valuable?”

For SMEs, this mindset can turn constraints into opportunities and encourage continuous innovation—even when resources are limited.

Context, Input, Process, and Product (CIPP) Model

When we talk about evaluating a training or development program, it is important to look beyond the final results. The Context, Input, Process, and Product (CIPP) Model, developed by Daniel Stufflebeam, provides a more comprehensive approach to evaluation by focusing not only on outcomes, but also on continuous improvement, accountability, program needs, and the resources involved.
The CIPP model consists of four key dimensions. Context focuses on identifying needs, problems, objectives, and goals—essentially asking, What do we need to achieve? Input focuses on the resources, strategies, and program design required to achieve those objectives—How should we do it? Process examines how the program is actually implemented and whether activities are being carried out as planned—Are we doing it effectively? Finally, Product evaluates the outcomes and impacts of the program—What did we achieve?
What I particularly find valuable about the CIPP model is that evaluation is not treated as something that happens only at the end of a program. Instead, it provides continuous feedback throughout the entire process. This allows organizations to identify gaps, make adjustments, improve implementation, and make better decisions based on evidence.
In many ways, the CIPP model also connects with instructional design approaches such as the ADDIE framework (Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation). Both emphasize the importance of systematic planning, implementation, evaluation, and improvement.
From an organizational and HR perspective, I believe the CIPP model can be particularly useful for evaluating training and development programs. A successful training program should not simply be judged by whether employees enjoyed the training or completed it. We should also ask whether the training addressed a real organizational need, whether the resources and design were appropriate, whether the training was implemented effectively, and whether it ultimately produced meaningful improvements in employee and organizational performance.
Evaluation should not simply tell us whether a program worked. It should help us understand why it worked, where it can be improved, and how we can make better decisions in the future.
