At the CIDB Convention Centre in Kuching, the challenge was a circular, split-level double standing seam roof that required careful planning at every stage.

From the geometry of the roof panels to their tapered terminations, every detail had to be considered.

But one of the biggest challenges was the installation itself.

Certain sections couldn’t be worked on simultaneously, which meant simply putting more people on the job wouldn’t make things move faster. The solution came down to sequencing. Understanding how each section connected to the next, planning the installation order, and making sure every stage was completed with precision.

Because good engineering is as much about how something gets built as it is about what gets built.

The simpler it looks, the more precise the engineering has to be.

At St Margaret Church, the architectural intent called for a clean, uninterrupted roof form without conventional ridge and side capping.

That meant the roof profile itself had to do more.

The steel profile was carefully crimped and curved, controlling the transition so the roof could continue smoothly into the wall below. Geometry, alignment and detailing all had to work together — because on a continuous surface like this, even small inconsistencies become visible.

The result is a detail that almost disappears.

And that’s good engineering: solving the complexity underneath so the finished architecture can look effortless.

Congratulations to PDC Design Group PDC Design Group on the recognition of two remarkable Sarawak projects — St Ann Church Extension and Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre — at the NS BlueScope Malaysia Steel Architecture Awards.

Two very different buildings, each showing what can happen when good architecture, engineering and construction come together.

It’s always encouraging to see work from Sarawak recognised, and even better to celebrate the many architects, engineers, contractors and builders behind it.

Congratulations to PDC Design Group and everyone involved in bringing these projects to life.

We started with trusses.

It taught us to work with precision, to understand how every connection matters, and to get the structure right from the beginning.

As the projects grew more complex, so did we. New challenges pushed us to engineer new solutions and expand what EcoSteel could do.

But the foundation has never changed.
We built trust by building trusses. We’re still building on it today.

EcoSteel was built on a belief in precision: solving complex structural and architectural challenges with accuracy, careful engineering and a willingness to find a better way. That mindset has grown beyond individual projects into research, industry development and a team culture that questions assumptions and looks at problems from different angles.

Today, EcoSteel’s standard reflects both the engineer who founded it and the people he has built around him. Because the strongest thing anyone can build is legacy.

Some projects test what you know. Others teach you what you’re capable of.

Kemuyang Mosque was one of those projects for us.

From engineering the large clear-span structure to prefabrication, logistics, installation and eventually lifting the dome into place, every stage came with something to solve.

Even on lifting week, the largest crane available couldn’t reach the centre of the building. Within two days, the team built a platform to make the lift possible.

Today, the mosque stands as a reminder of the many people, calculations, conversations and quick decisions behind a finished structure.

And with every project, we carry what we learn into the next one.

Every big structure begins somewhere small.

In 2003, EcoSteel’s first office was a simple room, a few desks, a growing team, and a dream to do good work well.

Over the years, that dream grew with every problem solved, every detail refined, every project completed, and every person who chose to build alongside us. From our early beginnings in truss systems, EcoSteel has grown into a team delivering structural engineering and architectural solutions across Sarawak, Sabah and beyond.

The office looks different now.
The team is bigger.
The projects are more complex.

But the heart behind the work remains the same.

To keep learning. To keep questioning. To take pride in the details others may never see. And above all, to build together.

More than two decades later, we are still carrying the same dream forward.
