Not just a plan. A vision for an entire district.
We are honoured that the Keningau District Landscape Master Plan — Pelan Induk Landskap Majlis Daerah Keningau received the Merit Award in the Professional Category — Landscape Analysis and Study Award at the Malaysia Landscape Architecture Awards 2026, MLAA16.
The master plan was developed as a long-term strategic framework to guide Keningau towards becoming a Tourism City of Nature and Culture by 2035.
The study began by understanding the district as a complete landscape system—its forests, rivers, agricultural areas, settlements, cultural heritage, biodiversity and communities.
Through landscape character assessment, site studies, stakeholder engagement and integrated planning, the master plan establishes strategies for:
— Green infrastructure and ecological connectivity
— Nature-based stormwater management
— Biodiversity protection and urban forestry
— Climate resilience and thermal comfort
— Cultural identity and tourism development
— Inclusive and liveable public environments
The proposals were subsequently incorporated into the Keningau Local Plan 2025, contributing towards the identification of approximately 3,191 hectares of additional green area.
This recognition reflects the important role of landscape architecture beyond individual sites. At district scale, landscape planning can influence policy, conservation, development, tourism and the long-term identity of a place.
