What’s next for solar users under Malaysia’s new TNB tariff system?
You’re not alone if you’ve been wondering this. Rumors about “a 50% reduction in solar offset” had caused panic earlier this month due the changes of TNB tariffs, some even canceled their NEM application.
Well, the speculation is finally over.
📢 A formal statement from the authorities has clarified how solar benefits will be structured under the new TNB tariff system starting July 1, 2025.
🏠 For Residential Users (NEM3.0):
⚡ Under the NEM3.0 scheme, your excess solar energy exported during the day can still fully offset your nighttime usage.
This includes offsets against:
✅ Caj Tenaga
✅ Capacity Charges (Caj Kapasiti)
✅ Network Charges (Caj Rangkaian)
🔋 But what happens after NEM3.0 ends on June 30, 2025?
Future installations will no longer fall under NEM3.0. Instead, solar users will need to consider:
✅ Self-Consumption (SelCo) schemes
✅ Community Renewable Energy (CREAM) projects
Note: These schemes require solar battery storage, as excess solar energy can no longer be exported freely.
✅ What you should do NOW:
1️⃣ Current NEM3.0 users:
Check your contract expiry via the NEM Welcome Letter and plan early to transition to SelCo or CREAM.
2️⃣ New NEM3.0 users:
Ask your solar provider for a hybrid inverter that supports future battery storage, so you’re SelCo-ready when NEM ends.
3️⃣ Those who canceled due to rumors:
Sorry to say – you might have missed the best time to install solar.
Post-June 2025, you’ll need battery systems – which means higher upfront costs.
