Protection relay calibration should not only be considered when a problem occurs. It should form part of a planned maintenance strategy โ€” particularly for critical electrical systems where protection performance directly affects equipment reliability and operational continuity.

๐Ÿ“‹ Under Regulation 110(4) of Malaysiaโ€™s Electricity Regulations 1994, protective relays and devices must be checked, tested and calibrated by a competent person at least once every two years.

Power factor correction is not simply about having a capacitor bank installed.

In real industrial facilities, load conditions can change continuously. If the compensation system cannot respond effectively to these changes, the system may still experience:

โ€ข Under-compensation during higher reactive demand
โ€ข Over-compensation during lighter loads
โ€ข Unstable power factor
โ€ข Unnecessary stress on the capacitor bank
โ€ข Continued exposure to TNB power factor penalties

The key question is not:

โ€œDo we have a capacitor bank?โ€

It is:

โ€œIs our reactive power compensation responding effectively to the actual load?โ€
