DEM Penang's first China project, in the boonies near Shanghai. When I was working in Hong Kong for John Tang & Associates, I never once went to China even though I was working on a few projects there. This project allowed me to see China when development was on the verge of booming. And before the 1997 financial crisis.

We received this email last month. It's strange because when the software is purchased and used for the first time, registering the software is compulsory. The company should have all our details, the number of seats purchased etc. But, now we are asked to send them all the details. They should review Malaysia's Personal Data Protection Act.

When the software company changed the mode of purchase from perpetual to subscription in 2016, we stopped upgrading our BIM program-the office's version is stuck at 2013. For all the capabilities of the software, it was like using a Ferrari in a small George Town street. You knew the capability and potential of the software but we were only designing 20' x 70' double storey terraced houses. Now, we have more seats in the office than persons using the software. 😁

Over the years, I was worried that we needed to upgrade the software capabilities of the office as rendering programs became more powerful and faster. So, we had no choice but to constantly learn, combining the old vintage Ferrari with A.I capabilities. Majority of the time and due to budget constraints, we experimented with free online software. We will share these learning curve soon.

DEM did a fair bit of proposals for Malaysian corporate clients. Some of the projects were in Myanmar, Manila, Philippines and even in Namibia, Africa. A lot of the artist impressions were done by an illustrator, Harry Roberts from Australia. Here are some of the artist impressions.
