VAASTU SHASTRA | POOJA ROOM.

In many houses, a separate room called the Pooja Room is kept aside to house the deities and to offer Pooja. Many times, this room is also used for prayer and meditation. If there is not much space for a room, at least a small space is reserved for the Pooja mandir. Here are some of the Vaastu Guidelines to be considered, while designing a Pooja Room.

LOCATION OF A POOJA ROOM.
A. The Pooja room should be in the East, North or North-East corner.
B. If it is a very big plot the prayer room can be constructed in the center of the plot or center of the building.
C. The Pooja room should always be on the ground floor and never in the basement.
D. The Pooja room should not be on the upper floors.
If you do not have space for a Pooja room, you can have a alter in the North-East corner of the kitchen, with the deity facing west.
E. The Pooja room should never be in the bedroom.
Ensure that the Toilet is not adjoining the Pooja room, and not even above or below the prayer room.

LOCATION OF THE IDOLS IN A POOJA ROOM:
A. The idols of God's pictures should be kept in the North-East, East and the West portion of the Pooja room.
B. The faces of the idols should not face the North, because then the worshiper has to face South which is not advisable.
C. Idols brought from ancient temples and broken idols and torn pictures should not be kept in the worship room.
D. Idols should not be kept facing each other.
The idols should be kept at least an inch away from the wall.

PLACEMENT OF POOJA THINGS IN THE POOJA ROOM:
A. If a lamp is placed in the Pooja room, it should always be in front of the idol.
B. All the material related to the Pooja room should be kept in the South-East of the room.
C. No bell should be hung in the Pooja room.
Never place any photographs to dead people in the Pooja room.
E. A cupboard or show-case can be placed in the southern or western wall, but it should be lower than idols.
F. One should never use the puja room for any other purpose like for storing things, or for hiding money or valuables.

INTERIORS OF A POOJA ROOM:
A. The roof of the prayer room should be lower in comparison to the other rooms on the same floor. One can use a false ceiling for the same.
B. If it is possible to have a pyramid within the pooja room it should be created as it is auspicious.
It is good to have a threshold at the entrance of the Pooja room.
C. The Pooja room should not have a door with one shutter.
The Pooja door should have two shutters.
Keep the pooja room absolutely clean.
D. If meditation is going to last for more than 15 minutes one should not sit exactly facing the idols. One should sit near the western wall facing the East without having to look directly at the idol.

VAASTU EVALUATION EXERCISE FOR THE POOJA ROOM:
This exercise is just a guideline to help you decide, where to position the Pooja Room in your house plan. In case you already have a house, then this exercise will help you to evaluate the location of your existing Pooja Room as per Vaastu Shastra principles. Accordingly, you can decide if you want to make some corrections and changes to your house.
Note the score for the following question and enter it in the score sheet.
Total the points.
The points indicate how favorable your House is, according to Vaastu.

VAASTU PLAN FOR HOUSE.

Once the Project Brief has been prepared and you have a rough idea of your preferences in the choice of materials, the Interiors, and the Exteriors, it is time to turn your thoughts to the plan of the House. Many people are unsure as to how the rooms should be laid out (the Plan).

So, an easy way to start in this direction is to refer to the Vaastu Plan called the Vaastu Purusha Mandala. This Plan shows the ideal positions of the rooms in a house, based on the Vaastu Mandala grid of 3X3.

Vaastu Shastra literally translated means the ’Science of Buildings’. It is an ancient Indian ‘Architectural Science’ that deals with inter-related subjects like Geography, Geology, Geometry, Astrology, Philosophy, factors influencing a site such as Topography, Orientation, Surrounding structures, Roads, Sun, Earth’s magnetic field, etc. and lays down guidelines for the design and construction of a house'.

Here is a summary of the basics of the Vaastu Purusha Mandala, known as the Vaastu Plan.

The Main Entrance, Car parking is preferably in the North-East.

1. Pooja room should ideally be in the North-East.
2. The Living room can be in the North or the East.
3. The Dining room can be in the West or the North-West.
4. Kitchen and Storerooms should preferably be in the South- East. The second option is in the North-West.
5. Master bedroom should be in the South-West.
6. The older child's/daughter's bedroom should be in the North-West and the other children's bedrooms in the South or the West.
7. The Guest bedroom can be in the North-West or the East.
The Study rooms may be in the East, West or the North-West.
8. The toilets should be in the West or the North-West and should be avoided in the North-East.
9. The Sump can be in the North-East.
10. The centre can ideally accommodate a courtyard or the extension of the Living room or the Dining room.
It is preferable to have the bedrooms in the corners as this allows for good cross-ventilation.

A house can never be 100% Vaastu complaint because of the limitations due to Site orientation, adjacent buildings, etc. So though the above-mentioned positions are the ideal positions for the different rooms according to Vaastu, your plan may have to be tailored according to the feasibility.

Directions Vastu | Most Important Subject in Vastu by Sasi Kumar Rama (Ivory Divine Home)

There are 4 principal directions, otherwise called cardinal directions and another four are auxiliary or intercardinal or ordinal directions.
What Are The Principle Directions (Cardinal Directions?)
The principal directions are East, West, North, and South.

What Are the Auxiliary Directions (Ordinal Directions)
The auxiliary or ordinal directions are Northeast, Southwest, Southeast, and Northwest. Each auxiliary direction consists of equal two half sub-auxiliary directions, thus the two and half of Northeast of North-Northeast and East-Northeast. The portion immediately after North is the North - Northeast and immediately after the East and thereafter is East-Southeast, etc.
How Many Directions and What Are Their Degrees as Per Compass:
There is a total of 16 directions including Cardinal and Ordinal directions. Below mentioned their names with degrees.
1. East 90°
2. Eastern Southeast / ESE: 112.5°
3. Southeast / SE: 135°
4. Southern Southeast / SSE: 157.5°
5. South: 180°
6. Southern Southwest / SSW: 202.5°
7. Southwest / SW: 225°
8. Western Southwest / WSW: 247.5°
9. West: 270°
10. Western Northwest / WNW: 292.5°
11. Northwest / NW: 315°
12. Northern Northwest / NNW: 337.5°
13. North: 0° or 360°
14. Northern Northeast / NNE: 22.5°
15. Northeast: 45°
16. Eastern Northeast / ENE: 67.5°

Have you found one secret magic in direction degrees. When we do add the above each direction digits, the final answer will be "9". For example Eastern Northeast = 67.5°. (6 + 7 + 5 = 9), another example: Northern Northeast = 22.5° (2 + 2 + 5 = 9). That is why most of the residents interested in number "9". Coming with vehicle registration also, owners like to pay huge amounts to get 9 numbers or 9999 numbers for their vehicles.

Directions Information:
Similarly East Southeast adjoining Eastern directions and South-Southeast adjoining southern direction.

Further, South-Southwest and West-Southwest are the true half of the Southwest.

West-Northwest and North-Northwest are the two half of the Northwest.

The plot has to be divided into all these 8 directions talking with the central point or otherwise called Brahmasthan.

Brahmasthan is the geometric center of the plot. For a plot or a house, we accept only rectangular or square plots.

Any other shapes are unfit to be considered for Vastu. The plots have to be parallel to the road adjoining the same.

We all are aware that we start Vastu dimensions by locating the magnetic North by using a magnetic compass.

Place the compass in the center of the plot or flat, mark North, south directions and draw the radial line, North and South are marked.

At the Brahmasthan, a line drawn at 90° to the North-South is East-West directions. The principal directions are thus marked.

From the Brahmasthan on the North-South line draw two lines 29° on either side. The extent of North is thus 58°. So also south accordingly. Similarly, 29° on either side marked on the East-West line designates the regions of East and West accordingly.

Thus the influence of 4 cardinal directions and their geographical dimensions are marked on the plot.

The other 4 corners namely Northeast, Southeast, Southwest and northwest are the other 4 triangular spaces remaining. In the center mark, a square location parallels the external dimension at the rate of two lines at each side. This rectangular space would be Brahmasthan.

For a flat, an apartment complex in addition to these 8 cardinal and auxiliary directions are added two more directions they are Sky and Earth.

The placement of various services such as water tank, mumty, staircase, water pump, and servant quarters is usually placed on the ground or on top of the roof or both.

The citing of these affects the residents of the flat or apartment complex as a whole, thus all these 10 directions are attended to.

Many people think the 8 directions are equal in their geographical intensity and apportion 45° to each side equally. The fact is as follows:

Sun rays fall perpendicular to the earth only up to 47° as such that alone is east accordingly all other divisions are made.

However, the difference between 47° and 45° is rather an
insignificance. As such taking 45° as equal to one direction would be yielding satisfactory results in most common cases. In large enterprises taking 47° would be more appropriate.

At this point, we would like to mention the difference between the true north and magnetic north.

The core of the earth containing molten iron makes the magnetic north to deviate frequently from the true north. For average people, it is near impossible to accurately mark true north. Again here the difference would not matter to our vastu principles in any significant way. Not only this the magnetic north is far easily recognizable than true north which is a complex mathematical phenomenon.

Taking this into consideration, we suggest only magnetic north. In the same way, taking a geographical realm as 45° is not considered negative in almost all cases.
