NOISES OF MONSTER AND SKETCHES OF FRAME
“People ask me what my sketches are about.
The truth is, I don’t really know.
But I do know that they are simply a way of translating the things in my mind into objects on paper.
Maybe it is because drawing calms me down. It makes me stay a little longer in a place, notice things I would otherwise walk past, and look at things that never seemed important until I began drawing them.
Over the years, these sketchbooks have quietly stayed with me through parks, cities, cafés, canals and construction sites. Some drawings took hours. Others lasted only a few minutes before the light changed or someone called me away.
When I look back at them now, I realise they were never really about architecture. Well, they are architectural in the way they explore form, but not architecture as buildings or construction.
They became conversations with places.
Some remind me of a trip. Some remind me of a person. Some remind me how I was feeling that day. Somehow, a drawing remembers more than a photograph ever could.
I don’t think this exhibition is only about sketches. In some ways, it is also an experiment - an experiment to see whether people in Kajang are still curious enough to gather around drawings, conversations and one another.
It is about learning how to look.
I hope that, somewhere along the way, these drawings encourage you to slow down too.”
