NamPower launched their 1mLED Campaign, with the aim of replacing fluorescent and indecent bulbs that are mostly switched on during peak hours in areas such as the living room, kitchen and passages. An expected 30 MW would be saved at the end of the campaign, which comes at a cost of N$ 135 Million.

NamEnergy and Lex Technologies are the LED Champions who will employee 650 youth to do the installation on a door to door basis. Every household visited will receive six LED bulbs, the installers will carry a Namibian ID card as well as a campaign ID card. Furthermore, the country will be divided into two clusters;Northern and Southern.

Lex Technologies, will service the northern cluster which includes; Ohangwena, Omusati, Oshana, Oshikoto, Otjozondjupa, Kavango East &West, Zambezi, Kunene, Omaheke, Khomas (a part of Windhoek) and parts of the Erongo region.

NamEnergy will service the southern cluster which includes Karas, Hardap, Khomas (a part of Windhoek) and parts of the Erongo Region (Walvis Bay, Swakopmund and Hentiesbaai).

NAMPOWER has launched an exercise to distribute one million power saving bulbs to households in the country.

Namibia still depends on Imports of electricity, which amounts to 60 % which is a huge number to look at, when the country can really increase its own generation and reduce the cost of tariffs to the economy at large.

However in the Harambee prosperity plan, regarding Energy, plans are to increase the local generation from 400 MW to 600 MW by the year 2020.

At the moment we have 14 IPP's, who are to build 5 MW plants amounting to 70 MW if all are to come online by end of next year. Namgreen, who recently signed with NamPower their 20 MW solar project, while on the other hand NamPower has its own 37 MW solar tender which is still at its early stages.Lastly is the long awaited Diaz 44 MW wind project, which is still to be signed.

This will would add 171 MW to the local generation needed to fill the gap, if all this projects are to be erected within the time frame given be the Harambee plan.There might be other projects on NamPower's pipeline, but this are the once we are aware of at the current stage.

Finally someone had to stand up and talk the truth.

Mines and Energy Minister, lashed out at NamPower at a one day conference held yesterday in Windhoek, attended by electricity distributor CEO's and other stakeholders. He stressed out that NamPower needs to get it house in order, to secure the countries electricity, as he always ends up explaining to the president about the outages as this has a negative impact on the countries economy.

The Windhoek municipality has a notice published in the tariff for electricity increased 8.2%, effective from 1 July. The increase was necessitated due to the inflation rate, increasing 16.71% in bulk electricity prices as well as the commitment of the municipality to ensure safe, reliable and high quality power supply, according to the notice.
