The paint technology is essentially a physical process. This is however preceded by a complicated chemicals process which is involved in the production of the binder, the most important component of paints. Suffice it to state therefore that the binder production involves a technology of its own. The manufacture of paint therefore, involve mixing, grinding, thinning adjustment, filling and labeling.
Grinding, in the paint manufacture consist of wetting agglomerate into single particles or similar agglomerate in the liquid. Until the 1930s, grinding was an energy-intensive process coupled with low production rate. But during the 1990s, grinding was improved by the use of high speed dispenser consequently ,the process became less laborious and time consuming
Pigment is incorporated into paint mainly for aesthetic reason. These pigment are applied in slurries of titanium dioxide and common extender pigment. Other colored pigment are metallic oxide e.g iron, chromium e.t.c

*Doing it yourself:*

Understanding your surfaces (wood, stucco, metal) and their preparing them properly is critical for exterior painting. This, and using top quality products, primers and paints, will produce the best and longest lasting paint job.
The first step in a good paint job is to clean the house. Washing removes mildew, spider webs, dirt, pollution, grease and other items that will prevent the paint from sticking.
We prefer washing the house with a bucket and water using brooms and scrubbers to hand clean the flat surfaces. Others prefer to water blast or broom clean. Water blasting can damage the surface if done at too high pressure and it doesn't remove stubborn grime. Only after the house is clean can the exact condition of all surfaces be determined.
If problems like dry rot, water damage, termite damage, or moisture problems are found, correct them before proceeding to preparation.

*Select Color:*

Choose the main house color first (if that will be painted). Ask your paint store for a draw down of the color you are considering. A draw down is a 8.5 x 11 piece of white cardboard that is painted the color you are considering. The paint store will charge you for the quart of sample paint but often don't charge for making you a draw down. By using a draw down to view your exterior color choices, you don't have to paint those unsightly splotches all over your house.
Once you've deciden on your main body color, choose your trim color and accent/shutter color. Paint stores or hardware store paint centers have elaborate paint color chip selection displays that allow you to take small color samples chips back to your house to look at in leisure. Many paint stores also offer fold out color cards with ready made color combinations for you.

*House Style* :

Consider the style of your home and what traditionally has been used on that style. Look for homes whose color combinations you like – take photographs or save pictures from magazines.
Assess your house basic unchangeable features: These features are elements of your home that will not be painted.
Roof tiles or asphalt shingles Stone or brick work on the house Unpaitned or Copper Downspouts and Rain gutters Trees and plants Cement Steps or porch
It is easiest to pick paint colors that are compatible with the colors of these permanent features.
