Guide to Sweet Potato Cultivation

1. Climate and Soil Requirements

Climate: Sweet potatoes require a warm, tropical to subtropical climate, with an optimal temperature range of 21°C to 26°C (70°F–79°F).

Frost sensitivity: Sweet potatoes are sensitive to frost and require 4–6 months of warm weather.

Soil:

Well-drained, sandy loam or loamy soil is ideal.

The pH should be between 5.5 and 6.5.

Avoid waterlogged or heavy clay soils.

2. Land Preparation

Clear the land of w**ds and previous crop residues.

Deep plow the soil to a depth of about 25–30 cm.

Form raised beds or ridges, 30–40 cm high, spaced about 60–90 cm apart.

Add well-rotted manure or compost at a rate of 10–20 tons per hectare.

3. Propagation

Sweet potatoes are propagated through vine cuttings (slips), not seeds.

Cut 25–30 cm long healthy vines from mature plants (2–3 months old).

Remove the lower leaves and plant the cuttings horizontally or at a slant, with at least 2–3 nodes buried.

4. Planting

Spacing:

Between rows: 75–90 cm.

Between plants: 25–30 cm.

Plant at the beginning of the rainy season or provide irrigation.

Ideal planting time:

Tropical regions: Early rainy season.

Temperate/subtropical: After last frost.

5. Irrigation

Water regularly, but avoid overwatering.

Ensure moisture during:

First 2 weeks (for root establishment).

Tuber bulking stage (6–10 weeks after planting).

Reduce irrigation near harvest to prevent tuber rot.

6. W**ding and Maintenance

W**d regularly, especially during the first 6–8 weeks.

Apply mulch to reduce w**d growth and retain soil moisture.

Light earthing up (adding soil around the base of plants) helps with root development.

7. Fertilization

General guideline per hectare:

Nitrogen: 40–60 kg.

Phosphorus: 60–90 kg.

Potassium: 100–120 kg.

Avoid excessive nitrogen, as it promotes vines instead of tubers.

8. Pests and Diseases

Common pests:

Sweet potato weevil (most damaging).

Aphids and whiteflies.

Diseases:

Fusarium wilt.

Leaf spot.

Root rot.

Control:

Use disease-free vines.

Practice crop rotation.

Remove and destroy infected plants.

Use biopesticides or safe chemical options when needed.

9. Harvesting

Sweet potatoes are ready in 3.5 to 5 months, depending on the variety and climate.

Leaves begin yellowing, and vines start to dry.

Loosen soil carefully to avoid damaging tubers.

Harvest in dry weather if possible.

10. Post-Harvest Handling

Cure sweet potatoes (let them dry) in warm (30°C), humid conditions for 7–10 days to improve shelf life.

Store in a cool, dry place (12–15°C) with good ventilation.

Bonus Tips

Rotate crops every 2–3 years to avoid disease build-up.

Use improved, high-yielding, pest-resistant varieties.

Market your produce fresh, or explore value-added products like chips, flour, or puree. 🥔
