Ever wondered what those concrete bases under columns are called?
They are called column footings (a type of foundation footing).
Think about your legs. Your leg carries your body weight, but your foot spreads that weight and helps you stand firmly on the ground.
A building works in a similar way.
The column carries the weight of the building, while the footing spreads that load into the soil, giving the structure a stable base.
Before casting, the reinforcement steel is arranged to strengthen the footing. After concrete is poured and hardened, it becomes the strong support for the column above.
Simply put, the column is like the leg of the building, and the footing is the foot that helps it stand.

Have you noticed a crack like this on a building before ?
A crack that runs vertically from the wall down towards the foundation may be a sign of foundation movement or settlement.
This can happen when the foundation is not settling evenly, possibly due to soil movement, weak ground conditions, or construction issues.
So, what can be done?
The first step is proper inspection to find out if the crack is still active and what is causing the movement. Depending on the severity, the solution may involve fixing drainage issues around the building, strengthening the foundation, or repairing the wall after the main problem has been addressed.
The mistake many people make is simply filling the crack and repainting without finding the cause. This may only hide the problem temporarily.
A crack is a building’s way of communicating. Early inspection can help prevent bigger structural problems in the future.
