This photograph captures Frank Lloyd Wright, Hilla Rebay, and his client, Solomon R. Guggenheim, in 1945 as they examine the architectural model for the future Guggenheim Museum.

This significant meeting, documented by photographer William Short, highlights the collaborative vision behind one of the most iconic structures in modern architecture.

Hilla Rebay (center) was the driving force behind the commission, serving as the visionary who insisted that Frank Lloyd Wright was the right architect for the job.

Designed by Richard Meier, the Douglas House is defined by its stark white, geometric form and a dramatic, inverted entry sequence that integrates into a steep, wooded landscape.

By placing this clean, man-made form directly into a dense, wild conifer forest, Meier created a powerful visual contrast, emphasizing the passionate dialectic between the mechanical and the natural.

In a departure from conventional home designs where you enter at ground level, you instead arrive at the Douglas House from the top floor via a bridge that connects the house directly to the road.

Despite being a staunch atheist, Le Corbusier was commissioned to build this chapel, creating a profound spiritual space centered on ineffable geometry rather than religious dogma.

His rejection of traditional floor plans and crucifixes sparked outrage among local clergy, who viewed his secular, abstract approach as a pagan betrayal of the faith.

Ultimately, the iconic building triumphed by proving that architecture could evoke a powerful sense of the sacred for the user, regardless of the architect's personal lack of belief.

"I don't know why people hire architects and tell them what to do."

Gehry on 'Trust as a component of design'

For Gehry, why pay for a professional if you're going to dictate the design?

He argues that when a client hires an architect, they are buying into a specific creative process and a unique professional perspective.

By dictating the design, the client effectively strips the architect of the very expertise they were hired for.

Ultimately, the deconstructivist architect is advocating for a relationship based on partnership rather than command.

His philosophy: Tell me what your goals and problems are—not what the walls should look like.

This striking vaulted ceiling located at Garrison Church in Ulm, Germany, is a masterpiece of early 20th-century architecture designed by Theodor Fischer.

Its unique, vortex-like brick structure showcases an innovative blend of traditional materials and expressive engineering.

A testament to human hands shaping stone into a living vortex.

This image captures the Contemplative Court located inside the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C.

Designed by David Adjaye as a space for reflection and quiet meditation, the court features a central cylindrical waterfall that descends from a skylight into a circular pool below.

The walls of the chamber are made of caramel-toned, bronze-laminated glass and feature engraved quotes from historical figures, including Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela.

Have you visited this space, or is it on your list?

"All roofs leak."

— Frank Lloyd Wright

Frank Lloyd Wright's hilarious quote, usually while defending his architecture.

Wright was so obsessed with low, flat rooflines, dramatic cantilevers, and sprawling skylights that practically every masterpiece he ever created ended up needing a bucket underneath it.

Why did they leak?

FLW was pushing the absolute limits of 20th-century technology. He used experimental materials, untried concrete techniques, and flat-roof designs long before modern waterproofing membranes, flashing, and sealants existed.

To Wright, if the architecture was beautiful enough, the clients should just tolerate a little rain indoors.

As his famous client, Herbert Johnson later joked:

"At that time, if I hadn’t smoked ci**rs, I think I would have smothered. But when I looked at the building, I forgot about the leaks."

At first glance, this building's sweeping, fragmented curves and bold sculptural presence might easily lead you to think this is Gehry. Not at all.

This striking "twin conch" structure was actually designed by architect Dr. Gao Shanxing (Scott Gao) and his firm, G.D.F. Design Associates.

The Iconic Villa Savoye Unpopular Fun Fact 2.

Now a UNESCO World Heritage site. While it looked stunning in photographs, living there was incredibly uncomfortable for the owners, Pierre and Émilie Savoye.

Le Corbusier was so obsessed with his sleek, flat-roof aesthetic that he didn't properly account for a very basic thing: French rain.

The roof leaked severely, the skylights rattled and let water in, and the walls suffered from dampness.

It got so bad that Madame Savoye wrote a letter to Le Corbusier stating: "It’s raining in the hall, it’s raining on the ramp, and the wall of my garage is completely soaked... It’s uninhabitable."

Instead of being apologetic about his masterpiece being a leaky greenhouse, Le Corbusier was notoriously arrogänt about it.

Even when Savoye family complained that the house was making their son ill due to the dampness and cold, Le Corbusier essentially told them they didn't know how to live in a modern house.

When they threatened legal action to get him to fix the flaws, he actually threatened to countersue them for damaging his artistic reputation with their complaints.

The only reason a massive lawsuit didn't happen is because World War II broke out and everyone fled for their lives.
