Many people use these fixtures every day but don’t understand what is happening behind the wall and under the floor.
The toilet sends wastewater through the drain, while the wash hand basin drains through a P-trap before joining the drainage system. The P-trap holds water that helps prevent sewer gases and bad odors from entering the bathroom.
Proper venting is also important because it allows air into the drainage system and helps the wastewater flow properly.

Here is how the toilet and wash hand basin share the same drainage system correctly and safely:
* The Shared Main Drain: Wastewater from both your water closet (toilet) and wash hand basin flows into a single main soil-and-waste line beneath the floor.
* The Basin P-Trap Seal: Underneath the sink, a curved pipe called a P-trap stays filled with a small standing pool of water. This water seal creates an airtight barrier that stops foul sewer gases and odors from coming back up through the basin drain into the bathroom.
* Branch Drain Connection: The 2-inch basin drain line runs horizontally to meet the vertical stack via a branch connection, allowing wastewater to flow down into the main line without back-flowing into other fixtures.
* The Vent Stack (Airflow): The vertical pipe extends upward through the roof to allow fresh air into the system. This equalizes pressure inside the pipes so that flushing the heavy volume of water from the toilet doesn't create a vacuum that pulls the water seal out of the basin's P-trap.

Most people press the flush handle and only see the water disappear. But a complete plumbing system is doing much more underneath.

When you flush, water leaves the tank and enters the bowl with force. That water pushes the waste through the toilet trapway and into the drain pipe.

💧 The fill valve refills the tank.
🔧 The flush valve and flapper control the release of water.
🚽 The trapway carries waste out of the toilet.
💨 The vent pipe helps maintain proper airflow in the drainage system.
🛠️ The drain pipe carries wastewater toward the main sewer line.

Every part has a purpose.
