Golden Sands Lake in Hangzhou, the Golden Sands Lake Grand Theate
Architecture that Flows with the Lake
Article - Ajarn Nueng - The Architect Storyteller
Located on the northern shore of Golden Sands Lake in Hangzhou, the Golden Sands Lake Grand Theater appears as a soft white form floating above the water. Designed by CCTN Design, the 44,000-square-meter complex serves as a cultural landmark for the district.
The building takes on an organic form, resembling two smooth stones shaped by water. Its flowing curves echo the natural landscape of the lake, creating a gentle architectural presence rather than rigid geometry.
The program is organized into two main volumes: a 1,400-seat grand theater and a 500-seat multipurpose hall, connected by a large Grand Lobby that opens toward the lake, functioning as a civic cultural plaza.
The exterior is wrapped with more than 5,000 triangular perforated panels, forming a dynamic façade that filters sunlight, reduces heat, and creates shifting shadows throughout the day. The white GFRC skin reflects the sky and surrounding water, blending the architecture with its environment.
Seen from afar, this building is not just a theater.
It becomes a dialogue between architecture, city, and nature.
Because sometimes,
the best architecture does not try to dominate nature
it simply flows with it.
