ABOUT MKPAT ENIN LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA
Mkpat Enin is a Local Government Area located in Akwa Ibom State, in the South-South region of Nigeria. Nestled at an altitude of approximately 185 metres (607 feet) above sea level, it spans an area of 322.35 square kilometres (124.46 sq mi), making it the second largest LGA in the state.
Strategically positioned within the state’s industrial corridor, Mkpat Enin shares boundaries with Eastern Obolo, Etinan, Oruk Anam, Onna, and Ikot Abasi LGAs. The people of Mkpat Enin are primarily Ibibio speakers, deeply rooted in their culture and tradition. According to the 2006 census, the area has a population of 178,036.
Agriculture thrives in Mkpat Enin, with rich produce such as palm fruit, coconut, plantain, cassava, and vegetables. The area is also endowed with a wealth of natural resources including crude oil, natural gas, limestone, magnesium, iron ore, salt, and gypsum.
Historically significant, crude oil was first discovered in Nigeria at Ikot Akpa Ekop village in Mkpat Enin as early as 1953, even before the commercial find at Oloibiri (present-day Bayelsa) in 1956.
The area boasts expansive forest reserves, yielding valuable resources like timber and palm produce.
Mkpat Enin is also an educational hub, being home to the main campus of Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), located in the community of Ikot Akpaden. This positions the LGA as a key player in educational development within the state.
The LGA is made up of four clans — Ibiaku, Ikpa Ibom, Ikpa Ikono, and Ukpum Minya — and encompasses 87 gazetted villages.
Currently, Hon. (Engr.) Emmanuel John Inyang serves as the Executive Chairman of Mkpat Enin, steering the affairs of the local government with dedication and vision.
