Mecanoo

Mecanoo is an international architecture, urban planning, landscape, interior & restoration practice.

Mecanoo, officially founded in Delft in 1984, is made up of a highly multidisciplinary staff of creative professionals from 25 countries. The team includes architects, interior designers, urban planners, landscape architects as well as architectural technicians and support staff. Mecanoo is led by Francine Houben (Creative Director & Founding Partner), Dick van Gameren (Design & Research Partner),

and Partners/Architects Nuno Fontarra, Rick Splinter and Arne Lijbers. Mecanoo has extensive experience designing and realising exceptional buildings which serve client ambitions while creating vibrant end-user spaces. Each project responds to our philosophy of People, Place and Purpose: to the client’s requirements and the user’s needs (People); the physical context, climate and culture (Place); and the current and predicted potential of a building’s function (Purpose). The result is unique solutions for each varying situation, in which the disciplines of architecture, urban planning, landscape and interior combine in a non-traditional way. Over the years we have learned that functions inevitably change. Therefore, we must create buildings that are prepared for (un)predictable change. Sustainability is an inherent aspect of our design approach, feeding into an ambition to create new identity in a world of globalization, resulting in inspiring and authentic places, socially relevant for people and communities. Preoccupied not by a focus on form, but on process, consultation, context, urban scale and integrated sustainable design strategies, the practice creates culturally significant buildings with a human touch.

Architectural models tell the story of a city in transformation.

Mecanoo is participating in 'From Model to Metropolis: Amsterdam’s Urban Story 1986–2026', the new exhibition at Arcam Architectuurcentrum Amsterdam exploring four decades of urban development in Amsterdam through architectural models and future visions.

Our contribution includes the models for Brink Tower and De Nederlandsche Bank, two projects that reflect different yet connected ambitions for the city: creating more inclusive urban living and opening institutions back to the public realm.

From realised transformations to future developments, the exhibition reveals how architecture, policy, and public life continue to shape Amsterdam’s evolving identity.

Op Zuid wordt volop geïnvesteerd in nieuwbouw, onderwijs, groen en een rijk cultureel aanbod. Maar de kansen kunnen nog beter worden benut.

Bij Rotterdam Late Night op 21 mei vertelt Francine Houben, directeur van architectenbureau Mecanoo, over het vernieuwde Manifest voor Rotterdam-Zuid: tien punten om Zuid een boost te geven.

Daarnaast gaat ze met Maurice Boumans, stedenbouwkundige bij gemeente Rotterdam, dieper in op de Stadiondriehoek bij De Kuip waar sport, onderwijs, wonen en natuur samenkomen.

Mecanoo at BIG SEE Make Sense 2026

We are excited to share that the Perth Museum has been selected for a BIG SEE Architecture Award. Rooted in the creative landscape of Central and South-East Europe, the BIG SEE platform celebrates global architectural excellence and the courage to move beyond outdated paradigms to create meaningful impact.

The award recognises our transformative design for the Perth Museum, which focuses on honouring history while embracing modernity.

To mark this achievement, Associate Architect Rodrigo Bandini Dos Santos will join the BIG SEE Festival in Portorož on 21–22 May 2026. Rodrigo has been invited as a guest lecturer to join the conference panel, where he will share Mecanoo’s perspective on this year’s central theme: “Too much, or what is just enough?”

De Nederlandsche Bank has been nominated for the BNA Best Building of the Year 2026!

Located at Frederiksplein in Amsterdam, the project transforms a once closed and introverted bank into an open, accessible place for the city. At its heart, the former gold vault has been opened up as a public space for exhibitions and learning, while new routes, a city garden, and public areas reconnect the building with its surroundings.

The renovation combines heritage with sustainability, achieving BREEAM Outstanding and reducing energy use and CO₂ emissions by over 80%, while introducing circular materials and new green spaces.

Mecanoo has been selected to design the new Fraterhuis cultural hub in Zwolle!

The City of Zwolle and film theatre Fraterhuis have appointed Mecanoo as lead architect for the project, located in the Broerenkwartier. The new building will be a welcoming and sustainable cultural destination, with expanded space for film, education, exhibitions, and public gathering.

The design envisions an open and inviting pavilion with no back side, connecting to all directions of the city. It restores key visual links within the historic context, including views towards the Thorbeckegracht, while introducing a contemporary architectural language rooted in its surroundings.

As Francine Houben, founding partner and creative director of Mecanoo, explains: “Our vision reflects the distinctive identity of the Fraterhuis and the spirit of the Broerenkwartier. We envision an inviting pavilion with a generous roof, opening to all sides and offering an attractive public space.”

The new Fraterhuis will feature five cinema halls, alongside spaces for education and cultural programming. A green roof with solar panels contributes to sustainability, while transparent ground-floor façades create lively and accessible public spaces.

Milan Design Week is in full swing. There’s still time to experience Macaron!

At Masterly – The Dutch in Milano, Mecanoo and bert plantagie.bv present the Macaron modular furniture line within the historic Palazzo Giureconsulti. The exhibition brings together architecture and product design in a spatial installation that invites exploration.

Within one continuous space, six distinct zones reveal how Macaron adapts to different ways of working, meeting and gathering, from intimate settings to more social configurations. Curved elements respond to the rhythm of the historic arches, creating a dialogue between contemporary design and its surroundings.
