Podcast alert: What makes a library a true third place? 🎙️ An inviting interior matters, but ultimately, it’s about what a place makes possible: meaningful encounters, human connection, and a sense of belonging.

In the latest episode of the Dutch podcast De Bieb is Meer, our Head of Research Amy Goedhart joins Math Göbbels and Irene Harmsen for a deeper dive into Come, Stay, Grow, the book she co-authored with Aat Vos.

Together, they explore what it takes to create welcoming third places, touching on our Third Place Fundamentals model.

The doors are finally open! 🙌 Today, October 24, the new Zentralbibliothek Essen (Essen Central Library) officially welcomes the public. A new cultural meeting place in the heart of the city: a welcoming place for the people of Essen to discover, connect, learn, and grow. A place to make their own.

And what better day to open than Tag der Bibliotheken, Germany’s annual Library Day, celebrating the vital role libraries play in communities across the country? 📚

We wish the library team and the people of Essen many wonderful years in their new third place! 💛

The new Zentralbibliothek Essen is a design by includi and MVRDV in collaboration with Meyer Architekten GmbH.

How do you transform a former department store into a welcoming third place? ✨

Together with MVRDV and Meyer Architekten, we redesigned 10,000 m² across six floors for the new Zentralbibliothek Essen - officially opening on October 24!

Combining MVRDV’s distinctive red media villages with includi’s activated facade, the building becomes an open living room where the city can meet, learn, and connect. 💛

Congratulations to Stadt Essen, the library team (Stadtbibliothek Essen), and all partners on bringing this project to life!

How does an abandoned prison site turn into a three-hectare green living room for the city? 🌿
We included Stadsboerin Doetinchem as a case study in our book Come, Stay, Grow, because it shows that a memorable place doesn't have to be spectacular or polished to bring people together. It’s a freely accessible space where food, nature, and community meet.
When nature flourishes, people do too. 💛

Swipe through for highlights from the case study, and discover the inspiring full story in Come, Stay, Grow.
