1 year of offshore wind installation vessel Boreas 🎉

A year ago, we celebrated the christening of Boreas, one of the world's largest offshore wind installation vessels. Today, we are celebrating everything that has happened.

Over the past year, Boreas has become part of Van Oord's contribution to the energy transition, supporting offshore wind projects.

Climate change is one of the most pressing challenges of our time. As the need to reduce global CO₂ emissions continues to grow, so does the demand for renewable energy. Offshore wind plays a vital role in helping countries meet their climate goals.

Van Oord is proud to be involved in the building of future-proof offshore wind farms through innovation and sustainable partnerships. This wouldn’t be possible without vessels made for the job, such as the state-of-the-art Boreas.

Today, on International Day of the Wind, we’re putting the spotlight on the world largest offshore wind installation vessel once more.

O𝗩𝗮𝗻 𝗢𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗲𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘂𝗿 𝗥𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗿

Commissioned by Rijkswaterstaat , Van Oord will construct nearly four kilometres of longitudinal dams and create approximately 31 hectares of tidal area in the Dutch Scheur river. The project will restore habitats for fish, birds and aquatic plants, while contributing to the protection and improvement of water quality.

These measures support the European Water Framework Directive (WFD). To deliver the project, Van Oord will work closely with its subsidiaries Paans Van Oord and Van Oord Grondstoffen among others. By reusing rocks from its own projects, Van Oord will reduce transport distances and minimise the project's impact on the surrounding environment.

Construction is scheduled to start in the third quarter of 2026 and continue until the summer of 2027.

𝗩𝗮𝗻 𝗢𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝘂𝗿𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗸𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗮𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝘁 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗲𝘂𝗿

In opdracht van Rijkswaterstaat gaat Van Oord bijna vier kilometer aan langsdammen en circa 31 hectare aan getijdengebied realiseren in het Scheur. Het project herstelt het leefgebied van vissen, vogels en waterplanten en draagt bij aan de bescherming en verbetering van de waterkwaliteit.

De maatregelen ondersteunen de doelstellingen van de Europese Kaderrichtlijn Water (KRW). Voor de uitvoering werkt Van Oord onder andere samen met dochterondernemingen Paans Van Oord en Van Oord Grondstoffen. Door hergebruik van steen uit eigen projecten vermindert Van Oord de transportafstand en de impact op de omgeving.

De uitvoering van het project start in het derde kwartaal van 2026 en duurt tot de zomer van 2027.

We are proud to mark another important milestone in the development of the Ecowende offshore wind farm: the successful installation of the project's first wind turbine, located approximately 53 kilometres off the Dutch coast.

This marks the transition into the next phase of the project, building on the successful completion of the foundation works.

Van Oord is proud to contribute to a project that is setting new standards for both renewable energy generation and nature enhancement. Using our next-generation offshore installation vessel Boreas, we are installing 52 Vestas V236-15.0 MW turbines. Together, these will generate 760 MW of clean energy: enough to meet around 3% of the Netherlands’ electricity demand.

This vessel is fully equipped to meet Ecowende’s stringent ecological requirements, and its deployment in the North Sea highlights both the strength of its design and the scale at which it can operate.

We are grateful to work alongside Ecowende, Vestas and all project partners and look forward to continuing the installation campaign in the months ahead.

Selected for the Environment Agency’s Beach Management Framework

Van Oord has secured a place on the Environment Agency’s Beach Management Framework in England. Through this framework, we will support the delivery of coastal protection and beach management works along the English coastline, helping to reduce the risk of flooding and erosion and to protect communities, businesses and public spaces.

Building on more than 25 years of collaboration with the Environment Agency, we look forward to continuing to deliver sustainable and innovative solutions for coastal protection.

This long-term programme underlines our commitment to climate adaptation and creating resilient coastlines.

Last Saturday, Van Oord was honoured to participate in a strategic dialogue session with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten, and leading CEOs from the Netherlands, held as part of the State Visit.

The roundtable underscored the strong and deepening relationship between India and the Netherlands, with a shared focus on areas of mutual strategic importance, including energy, infrastructure, innovation, and knowledge exchange.

For Van Oord, the session provided a valuable opportunity to exchange insights on key themes including energy and port infrastructure, maritime development, and climate adaptation. Having witnessed India’s transformation over recent decades, the company recognises its strategic importance and is eager to draw on this experience to play an active role in supporting the country’s future development through marine ingenuity.

Van Oord thanks all participants for the constructive dialogue and aims to play an important part in contributing to the Strategic Partnership 2026–2030, which aspires to further strengthen ties between India and the Netherlands.
