After four years of construction, we proudly present you to Sluishuis! Amsterdam now has a new iconic landmark that forms a bridge between IJburg and the city center. With different types of owner-occupied and rental homes, a public roof garden with a rooftop walkway, bird and recreational islands, jetties for boats, and hospitality facilities, Sluishuis is a place for everyone.

Barcode Architects designed Sluishuis in collaboration with Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG). Dirk Peters (founding partner Barcode Architects): “Sluishuis is a unique residential building with a striking identity and with strong global appeal. The 49.000m² sustainable landmark building combines architecture, art, and imagination in a stunning way and creates a new pleasant living experience at the waterfront of . It's a space where city life and landscape merge into a state-of-the-art public realm.”

The expressive green brick in the façade gives The Orchard II a striking appearance. The various stacked blocks have a single colour palette, but the variation of smooth and contrasting rough-ribbed bricks gives each block its own identity and breaks the scale of the volume. The grid structure is shifted per block, which further reinforces the spiral effect in the concept. Green aluminium panels next to the windows react variably to the incidence of light and give the facade additional transparency. Planters provide the terraces with a sustainable appearance and contribute to a healthy living environment, nature inclusiveness and biodiversity. In this way, The Orchard II fits in with the green ambitions of the city of Rijswijk.

Various terraces have been created around The Orchard II with setbacks, which spiral around the building and react to the heights of the surrounding buildings. For each setback, a contrasting palette of aluminium and rhythmically placed, sloping balconies were chosen to add dynamism to the building’s appearance. The result is an eye-catching volume with a different silhouette from every angle.

In the redevelopment area 'In de Bogaard' in Rijswijk, we designed the high-quality residential tower The Orchard II. In the heart of the district, the building occupies a prominent place on Steenvoordeplein, which will become an intimate town square in the future. In the coming years, the area will develop from a monotonous shopping area into a lively part of the city. The master plan design focuses on the human dimension and the creation of a green residential area where existing and new residents can meet.

Barcode Architects responds to this ambition with an all-sided and distinctive design. With its sculptural, 54-metre high volume, The Orchard II makes a bold gesture towards its surroundings. On the east side, the building forms the entrance to In De Bogaard, making it an important link on the axis to the railway station. On the west side, The Orchard II will be located right on the vivid city square.

CasaNova contains a rich residential program with 116 dwellings, from more compact apartments in the low-rise block to spacious tower apartments and exclusive penthouses with large outdoor spaces. Floor-to-ceiling windows ensure optimal daylight entry and spectacular views in all the tower apartments.

The vertical orientation in the façade accentuates the slender design. Red-brown travertine panels give the tower a warm and powerful appearance all around. Towards the top of the tower, the panels have gradually broader smooth-edged surfaces. These elements reflect the sunlight, creating a shifting appearance throughout the day and making the top of the tower seem to disappear into the sky.

CasaNova is expected to be completed by the end of 2022.

“Within the city boundaries, densification through high-rise is a favorable option, but anonymous volumes where residents don't know each other should be avoided. With CasaNova, we want to create a three-dimensional part of the city, where people live healthily, neighbours know each other and there is a pleasant atmosphere at ground level. The design principles used in this project, set an example for the new Rotterdam High Rise vision.” — Barcode Architects’ partner Caro van de Venne

The all-sided building brings new energy to the Maritime District, which is rapidly transforming from an anonymous office district to a vibrant urban area. CasaNova activates the corner on the Wijnhaven and forms an important link on the new walking route between the Oude Haven and the Museumpark, via the Markthal, Leuvehaven and the Witte de Withstraat.

In the Maritime District in Rotterdam, the construction of the first triangular tower in the skyline has reached a new milestone. With the completion of floor 35, Barcode Architects' CasaNova is at its highest point! CasaNova is a 110-metre tower with an iconic silhouette. The building forms an ensemble with The Muse, the sculptural residential tower by Barcode Architects on the adjacent plot, which was completed last year. Both towers are designed in synergy, both architecturally and in terms of the collective program.

Like the entire Bajeskwartier, The Robin is an example of circular design. Part of the original prison wall will be given a new place in the design, and a large amount of the raw materials from the demolition of the old tower buildings will be reused in the construction. PV panels will be installed on both the roof of the tower and the highest block. In addition, our building will be fitted with nature-inclusive additions such as nesting boxes for birds and bats, green roofs, and insect shelters.

Barcode Architects’ partner Dirk Peters: ‘The atrium hidden in The Robin’s core is an impressive and unexpected feature. The six-storey high open space is the building’s vibrant heart and offers space for many different functions, such as exhibitions, large works of art and public events for the neighbourhood. A unique experience for both residents and visitors.’

The residential program comprises 129 apartments and appeals to a wide range of people. The bright, spacious flats range from compact, functional studios to sprawling lofts. Private loggias and balconies, and collective green roof terraces on top of each of the three boxes offer the building's residents a variety of high-quality outdoor spaces.

We proudly present our final design for The Robin — the first residential tower in the Bajeskwartier development, a lively living and working area on the site of Amsterdam's iconic Bijlmerbajes former prison complex!

Our building occupies a prominent position in this plan — in the Central District, at the square where the two main axes intersect. With The Robin, the original volume the prison tower is rebuilt and extended with three interlocking, lower volumes. These 'boxes' are lifted 4.5 meters, creating space for a light, inviting plinth with public functions at ground level. By opening the plinth on all sides, we create a strong connection with the urban context.
