Re-think Athens, Athens (GR) - 15/25

Our winning proposal ‘One Step Beyond’ for the international competition Re-Think Athens in Greece has been a great demonstration of our approach towards creating healthy cities. Starting with the aspiration to create places for people, our plan uses a multi-layered approach which targets sustainable mobility, innovative climate control methods, sustainable water management and urban vibrancy. This integrated approach goes ‘one step beyond’ the required spatial transformation of Athens’s city centre and successfully transforms it into a vibrant, resilient and welcoming part of the city.

Korenmarkt, Mechelen (BE) – 12/25

Focussing on the importance of meeting places in the city, the Korenmarkt in is an important project in the OKRA 25 years list. Over the years, the Korenmarkt was taken up by cars. With the design, the square is once again turned into an inviting place to sit and meet. The sitting edges of the plant elements are designed in the form of grains, referring to the former function as corn market. Lazy steps are descending towards the river from the square, located on the south bank of the Dijle River.

The Korenmarkt now lives up to its name as ‘oldest square’ of Mechelen and is a bustling city square where Mechelaars gather for a drink and a snack.

@ the Houtmarkt in , a former parking square was turned into a green connection in the city center by realising an underground parking garage. Combined with the rebuild of a nursing home and the redevelopment of the Houtmarkt and Lange Brugstraat, the city has won back a green meeting place in the city.

The 59m high green wall, part of the new EMA building in Amsterdam, has started taking shape! Before the end of the year, it will be filled with approximately 52.000 plants, all contributing to the creation of a healthy workplace. This green structure will link seamlessly the landscape from the ground floor to the interior of the building and strengthen the relation between inside and outside. Looking forward to the final result!
