3D metrology in the automotive industry – the key to quality and compliance.

The automotive industry is synonymous with precision, where coordinate metrology plays a fundamental role. Most companies have their own advanced measurement laboratories equipped with stationary CMMs. However, in a dynamic production environment, there are situations where an external metrology services provider, such as PROram, becomes an invaluable partner.

When your Quality Control department is fully engaged in ongoing production, we can support you with:

↳ First Article Inspection (FAI) – validating production against customer specifications is a crucial step in the Production Part Approval Process (PPAP). We provide precision and independence to ensure your components meet the highest standards.

↳ Resolving disputes between clients and suppliers – independent measurement expertise is often decisive in conflict situations. Discrepancies do not always arise from negligence but rather from limited access to the right inspection equipment or software. We deliver objective data to quickly resolve the issue.

↳ Inventory and validation of production tooling using 3D scanning – injection moulds, stamping dies, and specialised tooling are the heart of production. Their proper condition guarantees the quality of manufactured parts. Our 3D measurements allow us to quickly verify wear or deformation, minimising the risk of defective components.

↳ Fast diagnostics of production issues and process optimisation – when recurring deviations appear in production, our mobile measurement devices (laser tracker, measuring arm) help identify the root cause directly on the production line, whether it’s related to machines, tooling, or assembly.

At PROram, we combine advanced PROscan technologies (laser trackers, 3D scanners) with over 15 years of experience to deliver precise data and solve your most complex metrology challenges.

In what situations does your company rely on external metrology experts? Share your experience in the comments!

Titanium Secrets #3. Why is titanium resistant to corrosion?

The secret of titanium’s corrosion resistance lies in its surface.

When exposed to oxygen, titanium instantly forms a thin, passive oxide layer (TiO₂) that “seals” the metal and protects it from environmental effects. This passive film is only a few nanometers thick. Importantly, the layer is self-healing: if mechanically damaged, it rebuilds within a fraction of a second in the presence of oxygen or even trace amounts of water. Heat treatment can further enhance its strength, although titanium is challenging to weld, machine, and form.

In seawater, titanium demonstrates virtually zero corrosion rate (

🔍 Precise alignment of offshore structures through 3D scanning and industrial measurement.

For large, multi-section offshore structures, geometric accuracy determines the success of the entire installation.

When connecting platforms, modules or support structures, even small deviations can lead to misalignment issues, stresses or delays in the schedule.

Our team’s role is to carry out dimensional control of structures and prefabricated elements already at the preparation stage.

By using 3D scanning and precise geometric measurements, we verify the actual position, level and dimensional compliance of components with the design documentation and the reference model.

This gives both the investor and the contractor confidence that each prefabricated element will be placed correctly and will fit the main structure without the need for on-site corrections.

In our latest material, our metrology engineer Adam explains how we use measurement data for:

✅ checking the positioning and alignment of structures,
✅ analysing deviations and levelness,
✅ verifying the fit of elements before offshore installation.

In the offshore environment, every correction or rework performed on site involves significant logistical, safety and time costs. With 3D measurements, we have a real impact on reducing installation risks and ensuring the safety of the entire operation.

When smaller structural elements are designed and manufactured with high precision, on-site assembly can become almost “plug-and-play”.

So if your structure needs to be integrated into a larger whole – offshore, on a platform or in a shipyard – a metrology-driven approach transforms a standard project into a precise, high-quality ex*****on.

3D scanning in automotive – prototyping & personalisation.

The automotive industry is driven by constant innovation, precision, and personalisation! 3D scanning is revolutionising these processes, from rapid prototyping and design verification to reverse engineering and the creation of custom solutions.

Here are some key 3D scanning applications where we support our clients using the Hexagon Absolute Arm RA8525:

🔄 Reverse engineering of existing parts or entire vehicles.

We create accurate 3D digital models of physical objects (e.g., classic cars or unique components), allowing for modifications, optimisation, or reproduction – even without original CAD documentation.

🎨 Interior and exterior design & personalisation.

Detailed scans of vehicle spaces enable the precise design of custom equipment, tailored bodywork, or unique tuning accessories – all perfectly fitted to a specific model.

✅ Prototype verification and CAD compliance.

Fast scanning of newly built prototypes allows instant comparison of their geometry with the CAD model. This is essential for detecting deviations and implementing corrections – significantly shortening product development cycles.

🔍 Deformation and wear analysis.

3D scanning enables accurate monitoring of geometry changes after load or fatigue testing, or during long-term use. This helps identify failure causes and optimize materials or design.

At PROram, we combine industry expertise with cutting-edge 3D scanning technologies (laser trackers, handheld scanners) to deliver the precise data that drives automotive innovation.

𝐈𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐞𝐩𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐝𝐞, 𝐰𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐰:
– how to create and use measurement sequences in PolyWorks Inspector;
– how batch measurements work;
– and when a part template boosts efficiency – and when it just adds unnecessary complexity;

This is a practical episode for anyone working with repetitive parts who wants to streamline their inspection processes without sacrificing quality or time.

$31 billion a year. That’s how much incorrect data costs the construction industry.

No, that’s not a mistake.

According to the “Construction Disconnected” report by PlanGrid (Autodesk) and FMI Corporation, lack of access to accurate information and incorrect project data cost the U.S. construction market over $31 billion in 2018.

Why?

Because:
↳ incorrect data leads to poor decisions;
↳ outdated information causes on-site errors;
↳ lack of control results in more rework, delays, and miscommunication.

What does 3D scanning change?
Instead of working with outdated drawings or assumptions, you get the actual state of a site, structure, or production hall captured in a precise point cloud. It’s not an approximation. It’s millimetre-level accuracy.

With 3D scanning, you can:
✅ see what has really been built;
✅ detect errors early – before installation begins;
✅ reduce incorrect decisions and costly rework;
✅ improve communication between design, prefabrication, supervision, and assembly teams.

$31 billion is just a number, but it shows how costly uncertainty can be.

3D scanning is a way to eliminate it from designs, schedules, and budgets.
