Notam

Notam Norwegian Center for Technology in Music and the Arts Notam is a center for the development and creative use of technology in music and the arts.

Anyone who has an artistic project that they need help to realize may apply to become a Notam user. We have at our disposal technical resources such as studios, computer labs and portable equipment, and we impart knowledge and pass on information about works both through our own arrangements and through contributions to concerts and exhibitions arranged by others. Notam's network in Norway consist

s of artists, academics, and organizations or institutions with technical or creative working fields. Internationally, Notam's network consists of leading institutions within music technology, and we contribute to the network through developmental work, participation in international projects and conferences, and as the recipient of exchange students and guest artists.

Join us tonight at 7:00 PM for our Online Spatial Audio Meetup. Tonights presenter is Zack Settel.

Link in bio for more info and link to meeting.

Zack Settel is a musician, audio technology innovator, Co-Founder and CTO of WalkThruMusic. He leads the development of a 6DoF “Depth Audio” platform that transforms songs into spatial ecosystems of instruments and voices. His work has consistently explored new forms of spatial and physical interaction with sound.

This meetup will be hosted by Monica Bolles. Bolles is an artist, audio engineer and composer who utilises emerging technologies, science and design to create spaces for the exploration of human experience in an ever-evolving and transforming world. Through the juxtaposition of the organic and the digital, art and science, technology and humanity, hub continually investigates what it means to be human in today's society.

Join us this Friday (May 8th) at 7:00 PM for a live SuperCollider Meetup right here at Notam!

At this meetup, SuperCollider users of all skill levels gather to share tips and tricks, solve problems together, and showcase projects and workflows in an inspiring and friendly way. Feel free to bring your laptop, headphones, and questions. Everyone is welcome!

When: May 8th at 7:00 PM
Where: Notam (Myrens Verksted 3A)

The SuperCollider meetups are hosted by Mike McCormick. Mike McCormick (he/him) is an artist and programmer, working with sound, text and visual media. Inspired as much by the constrained writing techniques of Oulipo as by the techno-materialism promoted by xenofeminism, his work combines customised algorithms with human performers and autobiographical material to explore human intimacy, vulnerability and our relationship to new technologies.

Utterances is an ongoing series of live-recorded sessions examining how voice, machine, and architecture shape the material and temporal experience of sound. Across multiple performances, an analog synthesizer and a neural machine engage in processes of similarity and difference, drawing from a shared vocabulary of 28 voices and a corpus of 4,200 words. Through this dialogue, the system generates a shifting field of phonetic expression—one that oscillates between intelligibility and abstraction.
Each performance is durational and site-specific, incorporating the acoustic and architectural properties of its setting as an active compositional force. The works unfold through gradual transformations, where fragments of speech, pitch, and tone evolve in time, exposing the mechanical and human limits of articulation. By focusing on the movement of diphthongs and the phonetics of American English, Utterances subverts fixed language structures and celebrates sound’s fluid, transformative nature. Across its iterations, the series treats utterance as both a sonic and spatial event—an act that resonates within and beyond the boundaries of language, duration, and the architectures that contain it.

Flow States #4 is the fourth chapter of a series of multichannel compositions started in 2021. The piece was composed in 2023 at Zentrum für Kunst und Medien in Karlsruhe and premiered at ZKM’s Kubus. The series originates from long-term research on “immersion” in relation to sound and listening. At its core is an algorithmic system developed in SuperCollider based on machine-listening techniques applied to recorded wind, translating its behaviour into sound morphologies. The system comprises a set of tools for analysing some aspects of wind’s behaviour, mapping the analysis data to sound generators, processing blocks and spatialisation engines. In this chapter, composed interactions between field recordings and synthetic sounds emerge as the piece unfolds as an environment in continuous mutation.

The work is contrasting aural places of intimacy and enclosure with expansive spaces and propagates through their interaction. The title is borrowed from a painting by René Magritte, depicting two coffins seated in a mountainous landscape. The source materials for the work have been recorded with an 18 channel microphones arrangement in a globe shape, encoded in Higher Order Ambisonics. The work was completed with the support of Musiques & Recherches at the Métamorhose d'Orphée studio during the summer of 2024.

Leah Reid - Reverie

Reverie is an acousmatic composition that leads the listener through an immersive fantasy centered around deconstructed music boxes. The work comprises eight sections that alternate between explorations of the music boxes’ gears and chimes. In the work, the music boxes’ sounds are pulled apart, exaggerated, expanded, and combined with other sounds whose timbres and textures are reminiscent of the original. As the piece unfolds, the timbres increase in spectral and textural density, and the associations become more and more fantastical. Gears are transformed into zippers, coins, chainsaws, motorcycles, and fireworks, and the chimes morph into rainstorms, all sizes of bells, pianos, and more.
Reid composed the work during residencies at the Ucross Foundation and the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. The work is available in stereo and 8 channel versions.
Reverie won first prize in the 8th KLANG! International Electroacoustic Composition
Competition, Musicworks' Electronic Music Composition Contest, Sound of the Year's Composed with Sound Award, and Second Prizes in both the Xenakis International Electronic Music Competition and the XIII° International Destellos Competition.

Vent is a dramaturgy of spaces. The physicality of sound and its architectural-spatial organization are central themes of the piece. Experimentation with materiality in listening led to a study of the effects and interactions of tonal and noisy sounds. Through the partially reduced use of tonal sound, the piece attempts to create an effect of monochromy, emphasizing the contours and inner details of the musical material in an almost relief-like way. The work is composed for a dome-shaped speaker structure, which reinforces a natural spatial listening experience.
