Baatlaben Reconstructing boats from the excavated remains of wrecks found by the museums marine aracheologists

Baatlaben is a project of the Norwegian Maritime Museum to reconstruct historical boats from wrecks found in Norway. The importance of this project is to further research the boatbuilding methods and uses of historical boats. The Baatlab team involves marine archaeologists, maritime historians, conservators and professional boat builders within an academic project.

Tim Morris, rigger fra Isegran i Fredrikstad, er på plass og bendsler fast jomfruene til riggen på Nordild. Nordild er en rekonstruksjon av et funn som er gravd ut under Schweigaardsgate, rett utenfor bussterminalen i Oslo, funnet er datert til 1503-1505. Kommende uker skal båten prøveseiles.

Our Story

Since the start in 2011 we have reconstructed a 7.8m boat found in the centre of Oslo, now called Vaaghals and used to give visitors the opportunity of ssailing a boat from the Middle Ages.

We have reconstructed a smaller boat from the Kragerø area of about he same period. This is now in the local museum.

We also celebrated the retirement of a 90 year old boatbuilder by building a Hurum pram dingy that sites in our harbour.

Currently we are completing an 8m boat found under a road near the Oslo bus terminal that is dated from the middle of the 1500’s. This boat is a co-operation with the local authorities to provide school children to visit it the old city area of Oslo.
