Beyond the Doorstep: The Architecture of Protection
In Nepali traditions, a doorway was never just a point of entry—it was a sacred threshold between the chaos of the outside world and the sanctuary of the home.

On Nag Panchami, placing the serpent above the lintel serves as a symbolic guardian of the dwelling, echoing an ancient design principle: every entrance must mark a conscious transition of space, safety, and energy.

From carved timber lintels in historic courtyards to modern shaded foyers and transition corridors, how we define the "in-between" spaces remains one of the most critical elements of residential architecture.

Minimalist architecture looks incredible in renderings—until it meets a Kathmandu monsoon. 🌧️❌
We’ve all seen it: a brand-new commercial building covered in dark, black streaks just 12 months after handover. The issue usually isn't bad paint. It’s a missing drip groove detail at the parapet wall.
Without a drip groove, surface tension pulls dirty rainwater off the roof edge and straight down your vertical plaster wall.

The Solution:
- 1:20 Inward Slope: Directs 80% of roof water back to internal drains.
- 15mm Drip Groove: Breaks surface tension so remaining water drops fall clear of the facade.

Good design isn't just how a building looks on opening day—it's how it survives five monsoon seasons without draining your maintenance budget.

Preserving Chabahil through technology and history.
A short history of Chabahil and a complete digital documentation of Chandrabinayak Mandir—created using photogrammetry, drone LiDAR, and measured architectural drawings for accurate heritage recording.
Grateful to historian Pradhumna Sir, Parmananda Shakya, Dr. Ramesh Dhungel, and Manoj Kumar Dhungana for sharing their invaluable knowledge. This project was made possible with the support of KMC Ward No. 7, Chabahil, and Ward Chair Bimal Hoda Sir.
