【Forest Day Celebration 🌳】

As a result of collective conservation efforts carried out since several decades, forest cover in Nepal has been significantly recovering recent decades. At the same time, socio-economic changes in rural areas, including labor migration, reduced reliance on farming, and the adoption of alternative energy, have lowered dependence on forest resources.
On the other hand, forest is expected to contribute mitigating and adapting to adverse impacts of climate change.

We have been carrying out demonstration activities as climate change adaptation measures in the pilot sites in Gandaki province, focusing on sustainable forest management, soil and water conservation, and livelihood improvement (including agroforestry).

The knowledge, results and learning through these activities, provide important feedback to the development and revision of forestry-related guidelines in federal level. At the same time, demonstration activities also aims to create workable model that can be replicated and implemented in other areas as needed.

Feb 5–7 | Paharepani CFUG, Tanahun
A three-day Entrepreneurship Development and GESI Training was conducted for 18 members of Paharepani CFUG in Tanahun Under the JICA-supported Climate Change Adaptation through Sustainable Forest Management Project (2022–2027 Project. The training strengthened entrepreneurial skills, promoted the participation of women and marginalized groups, and supported income activities such as goat keeping and agroforestry. Technical guidance from Aabukhaireni Rural Municipality also helped link participants with local government support services, encouraging a shift toward more market-oriented enterprises.

Exposure Visit
The exposure visit to Nawalpur District was conducted on January 30 and 31, 2026 for Paharepani CFUG. From the CFUG, 17 members (11 women and 6 men) joined this two-day exposure visit. The visit focused on the observation of and learning from model CFUG, collaborative CF, and farmers engaged in income-generation activities in that area. The exposure visit was aimed to promote the entrepreneurial mindset of the participants of women and marginalized groups in particular.
The exposure visit enabled the participants to explore the good practices of bio-fertilizer production, collaborative forest management, and improved goat farming.
On the first day of January 30, 2026, at Binayi Community Forest, the participants observed how forest waste and invasive plant species (IAPs) are transformed into bio-fertilizer, creating income and employment opportunities, especially for women belonging to that CFUG. At Madhya Bindu Collaborative Forest, they learned about governance systems, social support mechanisms, and inclusive forest management practices.
On the second day of January 31, 2026, the visit to Gosainath Agri Farm provided the participants with hands-on insights into improved goat shed design, feeding systems, manure management, and enterprise expansion strategies. The participants were particularly inspired by the entrepreneur’s success in operating a profitable farm alongside her teaching profession.
Participants reported that the visit increased their confidence to adopt similar practices in their own community forest, especially in compost production, livestock management, and collective enterprise development. Overall, the exposure visit reinforced the importance of community cooperation, women’s leadership, and market-oriented forest enterprises in building climate-resilient livelihoods.

3-Day Commercial Shiitake Mushroom Cultivation Trainings Completed in Kaski and Lamjung
Two batches of 3-day Commercial Shiitake Mushroom Cultivation Training were successfully completed in Kaski and Lamjung under the JICA-supported Sustainable Forest Management Project. The trainings strengthened the practical skills of community members, including women, Dalit, Janajati, and other marginalized groups, to promote shiitake cultivation as a sustainable forest-based income-generating activity.
From a sustainability perspective, a resource person from an Agricultural Training Centre under the Ministry of Agriculture, Land Management and Cooperatives was invited to support technical learning and help establish linkages between shiitake farmers and relevant government support services. Through hands-on sessions on log preparation, inoculation, incubation, and fruiting management, participants gained confidence to adopt improved cultivation practices and develop market-oriented forest enterprises in Gandaki Province.

This project has conducted demonstration activities at three pilot sites in Parbat, Tanahun, and Syangja so far, and in December 2025, Kaski and Lamjung districts were added as new pilot sites.
On February 16th and 17th, the mission, led by Dr. Ram Chandra Kandel, Project Director, together with Mr. Mohan Kafle, Province Secretary, MoFE Gandaki, and Mr. Shiba Prasad Shrestha, Provincial Project Manager, was organised to discuss proposed activities in selected CFUGs in the new sites and to monitor their progress.

The key observations and learnings are as follows:
- The CFUGs in both districts are committed to sustainable forest management, soil and water conservation, and livelihood diversification.
- There is strong ownership from DFOs and SWMOs, including allocation of resources and coordination with local governments and other stakeholders.
- Livelihood activities must be closely linked to sustainable forest management to ensure long-term resource availability and equitable benefits.

【Training in Japan 🇳🇵🇯🇵 (Aug 30 – Sep 14) 】

We are pleased to share that we successfully completed a two-week training program in Japan focusing on sustainable forest management, forest engineering, and community-based forest practices.

Despite the short duration, our participants visited several demonstration sites, observed field-level applications, and exchanged knowledge with government officials, experts, universities, private companies, and small-scale independent forestry practitioners.

The training helped deepen understanding in the following areas:

・Thinning techniques and prioritization in forest management

・Techniques applied in wooden check dams and soil conservation structures in Japan

・Utilization and value addition of Non-Wood Forest Products (NWFPs)

・Simplified mechanisms and policies for harvesting, collecting, and transporting forest products from private forests in Japan

・Nursery practices for producing high-quality seedlings and established plantation standards

・Research findings related to coppicing and forest regeneration

The team will now further explore how these learnings can be adapted and implemented within the Nepalese context and in our pilot sites as well.
