Successful Completion of GIS & Remote Sensing Training (SEPAL & Drone)

We are pleased to share the successful completion of the GIS/Remote Sensing Training on SEPAL and Drone Applications, jointly organized by FRTC and CASFOM/JICA from 5 - 9 October 2026 in Kathmandu. 

The five-day intensive training brought together 17 participants representing from federal level and provinces creating a strong platform for cross-government learning and collaboration.

This training was designed to:
• Strengthen participants’ practical skills in using GIS and satellite data for forest monitoring, mapping, planning, and decision-making, using online satellite imagery databases and analysis with Sepal

• Understand the general regulation when using drones and practice flying drone manually, and develop practical skills in capturing photos, videos, and the aerial photo at designed location using automated flight to monitor the forest condition. After photo shooting analyze the captured aerial photos using WebODM to generate ortho images.

• Apply the knowledge and skills gained through the training to identify GIS utilization and capacity development needs at the federal and provincial levels, and support participants in planning and implementing future GIS training tailored to the needs and context of their respective provinces.

During the training, the participants gained hands-on experience with the SEPAL platform for forest monitoring and drone operations and data processing, as well as advanced GIS techniques for forest/CF mapping and boundary demarcation.

We hope that the knowledge and skills gained through this training will be applied in each province and contribute to future GIS training and technical support tailored to local needs.

As the final Exposure Visit of the program, a Knowledge Exchange Program was conducted in Kenya from September 12 to 21.

Hosted by KEFRI (Kenya Forestry Research Institute), the training included a Policy Dialogue in Nairobi and field visits to Kitui and Kibwezi.
Participants learned about the good practices and models that KEFRI and KFS have been developing in close partnership with JICA.

Among them, research on tree breeding program including seed orchard and progeny trial of Melia spps., real time monitoring of forest fire, commercial forestry program by farmers, participatory forest management jointly by KFS and Friends of Karura Forest CFA in urban setting, ownership by all stakeholders in 15 B tree growing program of Kenyan government, monitoring of tree plantation by mobile apps and so on.
In addition, the participants also discussed on achievements of the long-standing cooperation between JICA and Kenya in the forestry sector.

Drawing on Kenya’s accumulated experience and knowledge, participants actively exchanged views on issues relevant to Nepal, including participatory forest management, benefit sharing mechanism, forest fires and climate change adaptation.

On the final day, participants shared key learnings from the training at the JICA Kenya Office and held a Policy Dialogue with KWS (Kenya Wildlife Service), bringing the program to a close.

The training was made possible by the active participation of each participant and the warm welcome and generous support of our Kenyan counterparts.

Learning from Her Journey: Exposure Visit to Maya’s Eco-Farm
Under the JICA-supported Project for Climate Change Adaptation through Sustainable Forest Management in Nepal (2022–2027), an exposure visit was organized on 31 August 2026 for 20 members of Thamtaletro CFUG, Syangja, to the integrated farm of Ms. Mina Gurung in Kaski District.
The visit adopted a “learning through firsthand exposure and interaction” approach, providing participants—particularly women and marginalized groups—with an opportunity to explore successful farming practices firsthand, tour the farm, and interact with Ms. Mina, a successful entrepreneur through questions and dialogues, helping to foster an entrepreneurial mindset among the participants.
Ms. Mina shared her journey, challenges, successes, and lessons learned, highlighting the importance of technical knowledge, financial management, market orientation, diversification, continuous learning, self-confidence, and self-determination. The participants explored how goat farming, fodder management, beekeeping, agroforestry, vegetable production, and shiitake cultivation are practiced on her farm. Direct interaction with Ms. Mina encouraged the participants to make better use of local resources, improve their farming practices, and develop a stronger sense of ownership in their income-generating and entrepreneurial activities.

TIMS Update: "Hands-on Training & Feedback Session Completed"

The CASFOM Project, in close collaboration with the Forest Research and Training Centre (FRTC), is jointly developing a Training Management Information System (TIMS) – a web-based platform to manage all training-related processes, including design, development, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation.

From 3–4 August 2026, the system developer organized a two-day hands-on training and feedback session at FRTC's Training Hall, Babarmahal, Kathmandu.
Participants from CASFOM, FRTC explored the system’s features, tested key functions, and shared practical suggestions for improvement.

Bringing together participants with different roles and responsibilities also led to active discussions and exchanges of views on how the system could be used efficiently and sustainably while meeting the practical needs of its users.

Based on the feedback received, the developer will further refine and enhance TIMS.
The system is now planned to be pilot-tested during the upcoming In-service Training Program, a 35-work-day capacity-building course targeted at officials working under the forestry administration at federal and provincial levels.

This initiative aims to strengthen the organizational capacity development of FRTC including efficiency, transparency, and data-driven management of forestry training programs in Nepal.

On 6 August, 2026, the fifth meeting of Joint Coordinating Committee (JCC) was held under the chairmanship of Dr. Rajendra Prasad Mishra, Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture Forests and Environment (MoAFE), and JCC members, at the Training Hall, FRTC, Babarmahal, Kathmandu.

During the meeting, MoAFE officials presented the Prospects for achieving Project Purpose and other Indicators that covered project progresses on output and purpose level indicators including plan for achieving overall goals level indicators after project completion. In the meeting, JICA Expert Team (JET) also presented on Forest-based CCA Extension Models based on the project learning in Gandaki Province including annual progresses in tha pervious year and proposed plan for current year. The JCC Meeting endorsed both the annual progress report as well as the annual plan including proposed amendment in Record of Discussion (R/D).

In addition, JCC members and other attendees shared valuable opinions on the management and activities of the project. And valuable remarks were also delivered by the Secretary of MoAFE, Provincial Secretary of MoFE Gandaki, and the Senior Director of JICA Headquarter Office, Tokyo.
The meeting concluded successfully, and the next JCC is scheduled to be held in one year’s time.

On 26th June, consultation meeting on the draft “Forest Resource Inventory and Silviculture-based Forest Management Implementation Guidelines” was held in Karnali Province.
Representatives from the federal MoAFE, MoITFE Karnali, and forestry-related organizations participated, and lively discussions took place.
We will strive to develop practical guidelines incorporating scientific knowledge and stakeholders’ opinions under various conditions.

Major suggestions from Karnali Province;
- Include water-source protection, contour trenching, contour terracing, contour planting, and recharge pits under CCA.
- Update the Forest Product Collection, Harvesting, and Distribution Guidelines, 2073 document as per new act and regulations
- Collect stratum-wise species and basal area data as basal area technique is most widely and most appropriate parameter for forest management
- Use a uniform data-entry and analysis format/software across all DFOs to ensure consistency and uniformity.
- Clarify the scientific and technical basis of the conservation-oriented silviculture system, as it is useful for field-level implementation.
- Include provision like 'For resin-yielding forests, sampling can be used to estimate total growing stock and annual production of timber, fuelwood, resin, and other products". Forest act/guidelines in Karnali Province has provisioned that in the management plan, all resin-producing trees in the relevant block/compartment should be listed properly.

Bamboo Durability Enhancement Training at SWMO Parbat
On June 15, 2026, a one-day training on "Bamboo Durability Enhancement" was successfully conducted for the SWMO staff of Parbat under the CASFoM Project. A total of nine participants attended the program, which combined both theoretical and practical sessions. The training covered essential topics, including: Understanding bamboo deterioration, Chemical treatment methods, Preparation of Boric Acid–Borax (BB) solution and Assessment of chemical pe*******on in treated bamboo. The training successfully enhanced the participants’ knowledge and practical skills in chemical treatment, aiming to improve the longevity and structural strength of bamboo for sustainable bioengineering and watershed management.

On 4th June, a consultation meeting on the draft “Forest Resource Inventory and Silviculture-based Forest Management Implementation Guidelines” was held in Madhesh Province.

Representatives from the federal MoFE, MoFE Madhesh, and forestry-related organizations participated, and lively discussions took place.

We will strive to develop practical guidelines incorporating scientific knowledge and stakeholders’ opinions under various conditions.

गत २़१ ज्येष्ठ २०८३ (तदनुसार जुन ४, २०२६) मा मधेश प्रदेशमा “वन स्रोत सर्वेक्षण तथा सिल्भिकल्चरमा आधारित वन व्यवस्थापन कार्यान्वयन कार्यविधी (मस्यौदा)” सम्बन्धी अन्तरक्रिया बैठकको आयोजना गरियो।

उक्त बैठकमा संघीय वन तथा वातावरण मन्त्रालय, प्रदेश वन तथा वातावरण मन्त्रालय तथा मधेश प्रदेशमा वन तथा वातावरण क्षेत्रसँग सम्बन्धित विभिन्न सरोकारवाला निकयका प्रतिनिधिहरूको सक्रिय सहभागिता रहेको थियो ।
