✨ Closing Evening — Materia Award Mountain Architecture 26 ✨

As the exhibition comes to an end, we would love to gather one final time at the Alliance on the 15th for a small closing evening of reflection, conversation, and gratitude.

Over the course of the exhibition, many students and visitors showed genuine curiosity about natural building materials, technology, and architecture in Nepal. This gathering is a chance to continue those discussions, and we will also take a chance to fhank all the volunteers who supported the event, and celebrate the exhibition together.

“GET YOUR HANDS DIRTY” WORKSHOP

As part of the opening of the MaMa ‘26 Exhibition, join us for a series of hands-on workshops exploring sustainable and alternative building practices in mountain architecture!

Learn directly from material experts through making, experimenting, discussing, and building together.

Between May 9–15, Kathmandu becomes the meeting point of two mountain worlds ⛰️

We’re excited to invite you to Materia Awards Mountain Architecture Exhibition (MaMa ‘26) an exhibition bringing the Andes and the Himalaya into one shared architectural dialogue through nature-based materials.

📍 Hosted at Alliance Française de Kathmandu

This exhibition grows from our collaboration with Estudio RAMA (Ecuador) , which began when both teams were recognized at the MATERIA Award 2025 .award in Paris among the world’s top 40 projects exploring nature-based materials. What started as a shared recognition has now evolved into a meaningful cross-continental exchange 🌏

At MaMa ‘26, you can look forward to:
• Exhibition of 6 projects (3 by SMA + 3 by RAMA)
• 6 lectures with voices from Nepal, Paris & Ecuador
• A dynamic roundtable across continents
• Opening day (May 9) hands-on “Get Your Hands Dirty” workshops 🛠️

What began as a two-day symposium in Kathmandu in 2023 is now heading to UC Berkeley. This three-hour event brings together architects and researchers working in extreme mountain terrains to explore one question: what does it take to build well in the mountains?

Featuring Global Award laureates and emerging architects:
Brian MacKay-Lyons (MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects, Canada/USA)
Prof. Anne Feenstra (Sustainable Mountain Architecture, Nepal)
Ar. Sapana Shakya (Studio SYDE, Nepal)
Ar. Kartikeya Bisht (Himalayan Architecture & Planning, India)

The event includes an exhibition of 22 Himalayan projects and a screening of Dot in the Landscape, on Sagarmatha Next (12,385 ft).

This Friday, 23rd December, we’re hosting Prof. Benjamin Spencer, Director of Design Action Nepal, working at the intersection of sustainable design, community development, technology, and health.

From participatory public spaces to river conservation and FabLab Nepal, his work explores how the built environment can support ecological restoration and preventive health.
