Congratulations to the Humphries family of Humphries Farming on being named the 2026 Pan Pac Forest Products Hawke’s Bay Farm Forester of the Year.

Last week Mark and Lochy attended the winners’ field day at Omakere, hosted by Mark, Hamish, Tom, and David Humphries, which showcased a well-integrated farming and forestry operation with a strong focus on sustainable land management, conservation, and long-term land stewardship.

The day provided valuable insight into on-farm sawmilling, carbon opportunities, forestry market conditions, wetland restoration, native planting, and the role of forestry within a wider farming business.

Congratulations Lochy!

A big congratulations to Lochy Stratton, who has recently passed his registration exams and is now officially a Registered Valuer.

This is a great achievement and reflects the hard work, commitment, and practical experience Lochy has built up over the past few years. Morice is proud to have now supported 10 graduates through to their registration exams, continuing our focus on developing skilled valuers within the agricultural and forestry sector.

With a strong understanding of rural property, forestry, and the Emissions Trading Scheme, Lochy is well placed to assist landowners, farmers, foresters, and businesses with professional informed valuation advice.

Well done Lochy — a fantastic milestone and an exciting step forward in your career.

On Friday, Greg attended the Moeangiangi Station Open Day at Putorino.

A great opportunity to hear more about the Cadet Training and its plans for the first cadet intake in January 2027. The programme builds on the proven Waipaoa cadet model and is focused on developing work ready young farming professionals through practical, hands on training on a sheep and beef station environment.

It was great to see the new cadet facilities, hear the update on the programme, and learn more about the vision behind investing in the next generation of New Zealand’s agricultural leaders.

Thanks to the Moeangiangi team for hosting a great day

Congratulations to Charles and Mandy Yule on winning the 2026 Silver Fern Farms Hawke’s Bay Farmer of the Year, hosted at Whakamarumaru Station, owned by Rimanui Farms.

The field day showcased an impressive finishing system operating at scale, with strong focus on farm development across water, fencing, pasture and infrastructure. It also highlighted the importance of livestock performance, animal health management, and decision-making supported by data and benchmarking.

Most importantly, the day reflected the people behind the operation their capability, continuous improvement mindset, and commitment to farming excellence.

Morice is proud to sponsor the Hawke’s Bay Farmer of the Year and to support an event that celebrates excellence within the primary sector.

Congratulations again to Charles, Mandy, and the wider Rimanui Team

Yesterday the Morice team had the opportunity to visit Matangi Station, the 2026 East Coast Balance Farm Environmental Awards Supreme Winner.

Owned by Robert Haselsteiner and managed by Jamie and Nicky Gaddum, Matangi is a leading example of a fully integrated farming system taking their operation from breeding and finishing stock right through to processing and supplying premium beef direct to market.

Located in the Tukituki Valley just south of Havelock North, the scale and diversity of the operation really stood out. Alongside their core beef system, there is a strong focus on land stewardship, environmental management and building resilience through a diverse farming approach.

It was great to see the use of Halter technology in action, allowing for more precise stock management, better pasture utilization and animal performance. Combined with a well-structured breeding programme, the focus on consistency and quality is outstanding.

Jamie and Nicky's ability to combine innovation, environmental awareness, and a fully integrated pasture-to-plate model sets them apart. A well-deserved result at this year’s awards and a great day out seeing a progressive Hawke’s Bay farming business in action.

Last week, some of the team headed up to have a look around parts of the Wairoa hill country. It was encouraging to see the country looking as good as it has in years heading into winter.

While Cyclone Vaianu moved through parts of the Northisland over the weekend, Hawke’s Bay appears to have come through relatively well, with only minor wind damage and some much-needed rain in places.

Morice has also observed that recent farm sales have been selling well. With the Fonterra payout this week, we expect this will support some debt repayment and help drive further demand for run-off properties in the market.

The end of an era at Morice Limited

Last night, we gathered at Mission Estate Winery to celebrate a very special milestone — Karen’s retirement after an incredible 18½ years with the business.

Since joining Morice in September 2007, Karen has been an integral part of our team, providing outstanding support to the directors and expertly managing the administrative side of the business. Her loyalty, dedication, and attention to detail have been truly exceptional, and she has been an absolute pleasure to work with. Karen will be deeply missed by everyone here.

As she steps into this exciting new chapter, Karen is looking forward to spending time in Australia with her grandkids, enjoying quality moments with family and friends, getting back into the garden, and hitting the road on her Harley with husband Phil.

While we say goodbye to Karen, we’re also delighted to welcome
Jodie Heiford to the team. Jodie brings a wealth of administrative experience across a range of sectors, and we’re excited to have her on board.

Karen, thank you for everything you’ve given to Morice Limited — we wish you all the very best for a happy and fulfilling retirement.

With the recent announcements of Wattie’s and McCain’s closing, along with ongoing uncertainty in the viticulture sector, land use change in Hawke’s Bay is becoming an increasingly important issue.

While TANK is a significant factor moving forward, alongside proposed RMA reform, Morice notes there is still considerable uncertainty for buyers and landowners as they assess future land use options.

Shown below is schedule 28 buried deep in the “Proposed TANK Plan Change 9”

If a land use change is between level 1 -3 and greater than 20 hectares or if the land change is between 4-6 and greater than 10 hectares a resource consent is required. This can create additional cost and complexity for investors and farmers in Hawke’s Bay, which may not yet be fully understood.

This type of rule affects the confidence, investment, and growth across Hawke’s Bay’s wider primary sector moving forward.

For more information, contact Greg, who can explain this in more detail and discuss how Morice can support your business moving forward.

This week we had Oscar Rosenlew from Finland visiting Winirana, where he is learning more about his family’s business interests in New Zealand, particularly the forestry sector.

Morice, who looks after the farmland and forests for the Rosenlews, took Oscar out to show him some of the day-to-day work involved in forest management. This included flying a drone to map some ETS stands, seeing how pest control is carried out, along with viewing some of the pruning work being undertaken in young trees.

It was a great opportunity for Oscar to gain a better understanding of how Winirana is managed and the practical work involved in the New Zealand forestry sector.
