I started pruning my elderberries today.
I can’t help myself. I just find it really hard to compost a good cutting!

Most likely they’ll all take, not because I’m amazing, just because a new tree grows so easily from cuttings in my experience.

Two happy trees are enough for my family, but why not grow and gift where I can?

Other easy faves to take cuttings form right now are:
Hydrangeas, roses, figs to name a few.

3 years ago I bought a handful of NZ yams (shout out koangainstitute) and they’ve multiplied to a situation where I need to spread out the eating- one million- yams love.
Sure you can store properly. Or you can just be a tad simple like me. I’m pretending they’re still in the soil.
If I keep them too warm though- they’ll sprout, as I don’t have a root cellar I reckon I’ve got another two months before they’ll need to be planted.

Here are three fun, useful facts about cape gooseberries:

1. They’re wrapped in their own natural paper “lantern.”
The papery husk protects the fruit from insects and disease while it’s growing. It’s also a good sign they’re ripe when the husk turns dry and tan. Fun for little fingers

2. They get sweeter after they fall.
Unlike many fruits, cape gooseberries are often best picked once they’ve naturally dropped to the ground inside their husks. They’ll continue to sweeten as they ripen. This is the time to save the seed as they’re at peak maturity.

3. They’re packed with nutrients.
Cape gooseberries are a good source of vitamin C, vitamin A, and antioxidants. They have a unique sweet-tart flavour that’s a mix of pineapple, tomato, and citrus (this is what ChatGPT says but I bet it’s never actually tried them)… I say citrus thou for sure.

Yes it’s winter- you can still plant cold hardy seedlings
No it doesn’t make you less of a gardener- even those of us that love our seeds have lazy patches!

Some tips thou-
Don’t trust garden centres- just cause they’re selling them doesn’t mean it’s the right time of year sadly (google as you go if you don’t know your cold hardy flowers and vege)
Put them near your garden for a few hours a day and then somewhere protected (similar to where you purchased them from) do this for a week or two or whenever suits- this is called “hardening off”
Plant your new seeds all around your bed and in a few weeks (when spring comes) inter plant your summer crop. As you harvest your cold hardy crops this makes way for your summer crops.

Go get seedlings! 🌱💚

You can usually search the chill times your garden has online, but to get even better with what goes where, you need to observe your land.
