Did You Know.... Older Laboratories May Still Have Asbestos Heat Mats
Many laboratories built or fitted out before the 1990s used asbestos heat mats beneath Bunsen burners, hot plates, and other heat-generating equipment.
These mats were valued for their excellent heat resistance, but today they can present a health risk if they become damaged or deteriorate.
If you're working in or managing an older lab:
🔬 Check whether original heat mats are still in use.
🔬 Never drill, cut, or disturb suspected asbestos-containing materials.
🔬 Arrange for professional identification and safe removal if asbestos is confirmed.
A simple inspection can help protect staff, students, and contractors while ensuring your laboratory remains a safe place to work.
If you suspect asbestos in your laboratory, contact a licensed asbestos professional for advice before handling the material.
