On Friday we were out in the vineyard testing a custom-fabricated vine saw for Tim at Hortex Ltd, purpose-built for retrunking ageing vines. The implement is designed to cleanly remove the head of the vine while leaving the trellis fully intact — giving growers a fast, consistent way to take vines back to the trunk and start the retrunking process.
Fridays testing took place in a block that's being pulled out, which gave us a perfect environment to dial in the cutting action and finish before this tool goes to work on vines that are staying in the ground for retrunking.
From a sketch to fabrication, a field trial, and now ongoing maintenance and support once it's out working — it's a satisfying process to be part of.
