Over the last couple of weeks, members of our team have attended both the Consulting Surveyors NZ Annual Workshop and the NZ Planning Institute Annual Conference.

These opportunities are invaluable for keeping pace with emerging trends, new tools, and evolving best practice across our industry. They also give us the chance to engage with peers, share insights, and stay responsive to the ongoing changes in our field.

A surprising discovery on a recent job in Picton!

Work came to a halt when contractors uncovered what was thought to be an archaeological item beneath asphalt in a public space. Following protocol, potentially interested parties were notified — but it was one of our own sharp-eyed surveyors who recognised the square-sided, pointed object as an old survey spike.

Further research unearthed a survey plan from 1892, prepared to bring the land under the Land Transfer Act. According to the Marlborough Express (Volume XXIX, Issue 67, 21 March 1893, Page 2), there was a boundary dispute between Mr Adams and Mr Oxley.

The article also mentions a Mr Harper, who helped drive in the pegs — and thankfully, as the paper notes, "was sober enough to know what he was doing."

Always reassuring to have sober help when setting boundaries!
