We currently have an opportunity for a junior or intermediate Engineer to join our project team for a 12-month fixed term period, however there could be some possibility of the position going permanent. This position reports to the Senior Project Manager and will require some overnight travel.
Your responsibilities will include reading and understanding contractual agreements, drawings and plans, tracking the project, scheduling, coordinating site staff and materials and resources, facilitating toolbox talks and other meetings, liaising with the client and other project stakeholders and collation and submission of EOI, RFT and other project related documentation.
The successful candidate will be a self-starter who is highly motivated, well organised and committed to the highest possible work standards.
• CAD drawing
• Demonstrated experience applying engineering principles to comply with scope of works and technical criteria
• Strong relationship building, influencing and negotiation skills
• Experience managing subcontractors and suppliers to meet deadlines and specifications
• The ability to develop associated documentation to ensure successful management of onsite civil works
The successful candidate must demonstrate:
• CAD drawing experience is essential for this role
• Minimum 3 years’ experience working on civil construction projects, ideally in New Zealand
• Drivers licence and own vehicle
• Relevant qualification/diploma in Civil engineering
• Some survey or GPS plotting an advantage

Smythe Contractors are a leading Engineering company based in the Waikato specialist's in Civil Construction works, including directional drilling, pipe installation, civil and drainage work. We are looking to expand our Drilling teams with multiple Support Crew positions on offer. Training will be provided for Support Crew that have not worked in a drilling environment, with supportive guidance, training and on the job experience.
These positions are for immediate start and will report to the Drilling Supervisor.
Responsibilities will include:
• Assist and support the Supervisor, Drill Operator, and Locator with the horizontal directional drill and drilling activities in accordance with blueprints and designated plans
• Able to follow safety policies and procedures and demonstrate a high regard for doing things right first time
• Provide safe traffic management support that coincides with site safety requirements
• Assist with equipment set up and pack down, ensuring construction site is properly prepared and cleaned-up
• Manual digging, pulling of pipes/cables/fibers and other relative tasks relating to trench work and drilling activities
• Working in tight spaces and conducting physically demanding manual tasks on site

The ideal candidate will have:
• Essential to this position is a full driver licence to get to and from head office and various sites
• Ability to work away from time to time for various projects around the North Island
• Construction experience in civil construction
• Preferable Truck licence class 4,5,6
• Preferable Certificates in First Aid Certificate including CPR and Traffic Control

All successful candidates must be willing to undergo regular and random drug testing. Smythe Contractors have a zero drug and alcohol policy.

Technical Tender Writer

About the Role:

Reporting to the Contracts Manager and or Director, you will enjoy a fast-paced environment where you will be working on and managing multiple projects and deadlines. Your focus will be to coordinate and execute expressions of interest and tender & bidding submissions. This will include creative and technical writing, editing content and collating information from a variety of sources, as well as obtaining and producing quality graphics.
This is a permanent part time opportunity (30hrs p/w), additional hours could be offered and worked remotely for the right candidate.

Duties
• Monitor tender announcements and download tender briefs
• Organise stakeholder holder meetings to establish what tenders to prepare and bid for
• Maintain the tracking schedule of circulating tenders
• Act as the central contact during the development of EOI, tender and bidding submissions.
• Facilitate the end to end submission process, including progress meetings, to manage end-to-end progress from submission to post submission requirements (e.g. client presentations, debrief sessions)
• Coordinate both internal and external stakeholder inputs, including working with stakeholders to wordsmith, edit and format proposal content so that it is compelling and conforms to client brief
• Work with templates in the preparation of bid and proposal documents, while also bringing a creative flair to both writing and graphics
• Extensive formatting of documents to a high standard in both Microsoft Word and various design packages (e.g. InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop).
• Assist in the development and maintenance of the company management system and attributes databases (e.g. project and photo libraries, standard response register, etc.) and ensure relevant project and proposal information is accurately and effectively captured and maintained for future tender and bid submissions
• Prepare materials for internal and external communication requirements (i.e. corporate brochures and posters, external BD and marketing material, content creation for internal and public website, etc.)
• Ad-hoc duties such as organisation of photo shoots for site (may require travel) and people, supplying information to other areas of the business, branding, marketing, etc.

Skills and Experience
To be successful in this position you will require the following skills and experience:
• Tertiary qualifications relevant to tender writing (Communications/ marketing ect)
• Recent relevant experience working in a tender/submissions role (preferably in the engineering industry with some technical understanding) and the ability to create methodologies and attributes
• Advanced level of Microsoft Word and a good working knowledge of other MSOffice packages as well as InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop ect
• Exceptional attention to detail and high-quality standards of work
• Ability to proof read and correct grammatical mistakes
• Experience in writing content for EOI, capability statements, or similar ‘sell’ strategy materials
• Confident communicator who can articulate themselves clearly, verbally, visually and written
• Self-motivated, highly driven and results oriented with outstanding time management skills
• Proven ability to work under pressure and to strict deadlines

Support Crew

• Preferable Site experience in civil construction
• Preferable Certificates in First Aid Certificate incl CPR, Traffic Control Level II, locating certification

Drilling Operator

• Stop, start and control machine drilling speed and align as well as position drills to stabilize machines
• Regulate downward pressure, rotary speed and air pressure, depending on the type of material the drill is moving through, changing procedures and settings for each individual job as needed
• Bore or drill holes in rock for routing, anchoring, blasting or building foundations, working with other members of the crew to ensure accuracy and safety
• Follow all standard operating procedures to guarantee safety and compliance on the job site and keep team members safe from injury
• Position and assemble casing pipes, augers, machines and other equipment with the appropriate hand and power tools
• Assists with construction clean-up as necessary
• Follow all company and site safety policies and procedures

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:
• prior experience in a similar role preferred
• Excellent interpersonal skills
• A Class 2 Driver's Licence

Drilling Crew Supervisor

Tracker /Locator / Supervisor
• Coordinate and supervise team of 3
• Verify positions and depth of boring locations before drilling to determine if it is safe to move forward with the process
• Check gauges monitor drilling condition and pay close attention to equipment to decide if it needs to be altered or adjusted during drilling
• Use knowledge of soil or rock conditions to determine which drill is appropriate for each job
• Assist the Drill Operator with the horizontal directional drill in accordance with blueprints and designated plans
• Confirm bore path with foreman and Drill Operator (including walking the bore path)
• Perform job site analysis (JSA) including completion of paperwork
• Ensure there are proper clearances to install the product per standards
• Record the depth of the tool head as required
• Ensure the drill head is in a good position at the exit pit to connect the product
• Maintain company equipment per service requirements and safety guidelines
• Assists with construction clean-up as necessary
• Follow all company and site safety policies and procedures
To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:
• NZQA HDD L3 Tracker/Supervisor
• 18 months minimum experience in a similar role
• Excellent interpersonal and organisational skills
• Ability to work under pressure and coordinate multiple tasks
• A Class 2 Driver's Licence
• Preferable experience in previous supervisory role with Drill operations

Project Manager

Reporting to the Contracts Manager and the Director, the primary focus of the Project Manager role will be to effectively initiate, plan, execute and control a project team to achieve specific goals and meet client briefs within project timelines.

Duties
• Prepare, operate, implement and manage detailed programs for the coordination of site activities
• Manage changes to designs, assessing effects on cost, and measuring, valuing and negotiating variations to designs and project plans
• Price / forecast the cost of the different materials needed for the project
• Interpret specifications, drawings, plans, construction methods and procedures to estimate total costs, and preparing detailed cost plans and estimates as tools to assist in budgetary control
• Consulting with Architects, Engineering Professionals, Material Suppliers and Technical Trade Workers
• Effectively communicate orally and in writing with good comprehension
• Prepare Tender documents, contracts, budgets, schedule of prices and other documentation
• Ensuring adherence to the building legislation and standards of performance, quality, cost and safety
• Participate in our system requirements to achieve a safe work environment whilst achieving high-end services that meet client requirements
• Measure and value the work done on site and produce high level analytical reports
Skills and Experience

To be successful in this position you will require the following skills and experience:
• Tertiary qualifications in Engineering
• Minimum 5 years’ experience working in a Project Manager role in the engineering industry
• Advanced level of MS Office packages and relevant project management software
• High level of communication skills with the ability to build effective relationships with all internal and external stakeholders
