The two partners of DDL Architectes, Gwen David and Joann Le Corvec, chose the long Cassia Graphite Black brick to create a richer and livelier façade for their project. They have successfully created a dialogue with the past of Lorient, a Breton village that was almost entirely destroyed during the Second World War.
“A long brick was ideal for enhancing the horizontal shape of the building, evoking the long shale stones of Brittany.” - Joann Le Corvec.

It’s easy to see the simple, solid integrity & sheer ‘honesty’ of the wall when you look at the honeycomb 100% natural clay block. It’s even easier to see the self-insulating and performance ability of the block and why this confined masonry system is so simple and fast!
In answer to the question – no extra insulation is required, no building wraps, no membranes – just breathable clay walls. All the concrete and steel is confined in the structural elements requiring 25% less than standard concrete block construction. Interior and exterior cladding system can be plaster or anything you want!

A family living in London, renovating their house decided to leave some of their Porotherm walls ‘fairface’ or natural on the interior. While the blocks always need an exterior cladding or plaster system and Porotherm is usually plastered on the interior with breathable plasters… This effect brings to life the gorgeous blend of natural materials for a warm, organic feel in the home. We love it!

"... It has been an interesting comparison from multiple perspectives. Firstly the time to get the walls up... has been significantly less with the Porotherm block. The amount of rubbish produced with a timber framing system is dreadful when compared to what we are now experiencing with the Porotherm block system. (virtually nil) ... suffice to say our dogs prefer sitting in the shade of the Porotherm walls... Most importantly it has been an incredibly simple and pleasurable process to embark on with Robyn and Chris MacPherson."
