Last day of the year and probably the most clever use of a cnc machine I’ve programmed in the 25 years I’ve been doing this.

A solid hardwood 66x30mm frame with internal hardwood 35x35mm vertical battens. Easy peasy when it’s square, not so much with the top left radius and bottom right compound curves.

I’ve never put solid timber onto a cnc before. Decided to make the curved sections from a front and back piece each 33mm thick so that we could check out for the battens in between. Would have been impossible to get a decent finish just trying to shape them to the external frame.

Have to say that today was the most enjoyable day I’ve spent ever in a hot, dusty factory. The fact that everyone else has finished for the year and it was only me and the owner left to get things finished made it more special.

Even the jig routes to hold the pieces of timber weren’t wasted, they ended up being cut into a 2 piece template to fit the rest of the timber frame by hand

I didn’t really know Mark and Suzana until the second covid lockdown that kept me out of NZ for another 8 months. Thanks guys for giving me my biggest challenges for the past 4 years or so 🥰

I rarely have my weird stuff displayed so publicly so here's a cool project I've been playing with for a couple of weeks.

From photos, to silhouettes, to geometry, to machine code, to CNC machining, to painting, to artwork, to installation this morning.

So after 5 months of late nights and head scratching, Joinery Integrations rolled out it's first built from scratch software last week. Not relevant to any of you guys but if you ever get the urge to jump out of a perfectly good aircraft, you may just get processed through my new software

Testing some sign writing software - VCarve Pro.

Veneer is pocketed 1mm deep to take laminate inlay. Pocket and laminate inlay pieces automatically allow for the cutting tool radius in corners and allow for a user controlled fitting clearance - 0.2 mm in this test.

Both machine files generated only from an imported bitmap image.

The whole process took about 3 minutes to import bitmap, generate vectors, and output tool paths.

Files tested and run fine on Biesse and post processor files can be modified to suit different machine configs.

Pretty damned impressive!
