Avon Park is open – and it was an honour to help bring it to life.

On behalf of Christchurch City Council, our team has delivered a full redesign and redevelopment of Avon Park along the Ōtākaro Avon River Corridor, with a strong focus on sustainability.

Working alongside Isthmus landscape architects and specialist playground designers, our Structures and Landscapes team self-delivered the construction, while our open space team completed the planting.

Our team has delivered a range of improvements including:

- A 65m long boardwalk built from repurposed Timaru ironbark timber
- 1,400sqm play area with a large swing structure
- New basketball court featuring artwork surfacing, and a soccer field
- BBQ area for community gatherings and kai area with raised gardens
- Approximately 50,000 native plants by the end of the planting season

The project reached a milestone on 17 May 2026 with a community-organised family day to celebrate the park’s completion.

Keeping South Auckland’s recreation centres open – and running smarter.

Citycare Property delivers annual maintenance across seven recreation centres with indoor pools and three outdoor pool facilities in South Auckland, working closely with Auckland Council to plan and coordinate the programme under tight timeframes.

The goal: minimise downtime for the community while maintaining assets to the highest standard.

Leading the programme is Trades Manager Matt Davey, whose experience building and servicing pools has reshaped how this work gets done. Under his leadership, the team has brought specialist underwater maintenance in-house, reducing the reliance on subcontractors and delivering significant cost savings per recreation centre.

These recreation and community centres are valued community assets, and we’re proud to help keep them running.

A job worth getting up in the morning for.

Sarah Hyatt is a Mower Operator at Citycare Property in South Wairarapa – and after years of chasing the dollar in roles that never quite clicked, she’s found work that actually means something to her.

“This is, to be honest, the first job I want to go to work for.”

Sarah values the tangible nature of open space maintenance. You finish a run, turn around, and the result is right there in front of you. The community looks better, and the work speaks for itself.

A good team helps too. She’s currently the only wāhine on the crew, but that doesn’t faze her. “I work with a good bunch of people where we’ve got each other’s back. We look after and check in on one another.”

Behind most sports games in South Auckland is a team most people never see.

Paul Cosgrave and Mike Brown have been working side by side since the 90s. Together, they lead the Citycare Property sports field team maintaining around 350 fields – roughly 300,000 square metres of community space across South Auckland.

Their week starts on Monday morning so thousands of South Aucklanders can head to their local fields over the weekend to play, compete, and cheer on their whānau and friends.

From coring, sanding, and seeding to line marking and safety checks, they handle it all. Many fields have soil surfaces that demand constant attention. All of them must be even, safe and ready for play.

Paul puts it simply: "People here are passionate about their sports. We do not want to let them down. We want to give them a fair chance to have a good game."

One of their proudest achievements was preparing Ngā Hau Māngere Centre Park for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 – meeting international standards while keeping local clubs on side.

Now they’re passing those hard-won skills to the next generation of sports field technicians at Citycare Property, passing on the "tricks of the trade" that only time can teach.

From architectural consultant to parks maintenance – it’s not the most obvious career move, but for David Bonnington, it made perfect sense.

After years in a desk-based role, David and his wife made the decision to leave North Canterbury, move to Greytown, and start fresh. He joined our South Wairarapa team a few months ago and quickly got stuck into everything from preparing the Featherston War Memorial Garden for Anzac Day to tidying the Martinborough playground area.

“I really wanted to do something completely different, something outdoors. I like the satisfaction of looking at a finished job and actually seeing the result.”

Outside of work, David and his wife have embraced the local community – joining the South Wairarapa Working Men’s Club, a weekly pool tournament, and the local choir. It’s the kind of fresh start that reminds us why we love what we do.

It’s clear David has found a place where he can contribute, learn, and feel at home, and we’re glad to have him on our team.

Congratulations to Citycare Property’s Te Puna Manawa 2026 Graduates

The Citycare Property whānau are so proud of our Te Puna Manawa CCHL Women’s Leadership Development Programme graduates for 2026, Angela Williams and Angela Yannakis. This programme is designed for wāhine with the potential, aspirations, and motivation to become influential leaders.

Now in its third year, the programme brings together 16 wāhine from across the Christchurch City Holdings Ltd businesses, and includes: four face-to-face workshops, guest speakers, a 1:1 coaching session, networking opportunities, and mentoring and sponsorship from senior leaders.

Ange Yannakis, Transition Manager is an experienced professional in the Facilities Management industry. Angela received the Brian Happy Facilities Manager of the Year award at the 2025 Ngā Tohū FMANZ Awards. She says Te Puna Manawa has been a meaningful journey of self-awareness which helped her personal and professional growth.

“Having a structured space to focus on my development was incredibly valuable, and I thoroughly enjoyed both the guest speakers and the opportunity to connect with other wāhine on this journey. It has given me the confidence to play big—being clear about what I want and taking opportunities, even when they feel scary—rather than focusing on all the reasons I can’t or shouldn’t do something. It has also reinforced that I can think strategically and that I have a lot to offer our organisation.”

Angela Williams, Head of Quality, Risk and Safety, is an experienced senior manager with a passion to support people to succeed and committed to maximising people’s potential.

She says, “Having attended many leadership programmes, this was different. Anna had a structured programme and outcomes but strategically aligned our individual needs throughout. Being new to the South Island, networking and connections is extremely important to me. The programme provided instant connection to 16 fabulous women plus mentoring and sponsorship. Beyond this, we had inspiring speakers and direct links to CCHL leaders who were willing to give their time for mentoring and conversations. I have come away with an abundance of tools in my kete, and strong connections to support and grow as I continue my journey.”

From trainee to leader – Rob McLaughlin’s journey with Citycare Property is a story of growth.

Ten years ago, Rob joined us as a park maintenance trainee. Today, he leads our Open Space Maintenance team in South Wairarapa, training and leading a team of passionate professionals.

“Watching someone gain confidence and pick up new skills, and seeing their satisfaction in a job well done, that makes me happy.”

Along the way, Rob completed his NZ Certificate in Horticulture Services (Levels 3 & 4) through Primary ITO. The training, combined with hands-on experience, has helped him guide and mentor many of the team members who have joined after him.

His team’s dedication to the work can be seen across South Wairarapa’s parks and open spaces, including moments that matter to the community – like preparing the Featherston War Memorial ahead of Anzac Day.

Caring for Whenua, Caring for People

Ka ora whenua, ka ora te tangata. When the land is well, we are well.

Community litter collections are another way we care for South Auckland. Working alongside volunteers and our supplier WasteCo NZ, we’ve removed hundreds of kilograms of rubbish – disposed of responsibly and sustainably.

We were pleased to join the Limited Service Volunteer (LSV) Programme Career Expo at Whenuapai.

Gabe Gray (Recruitment Coordinator), Jody Deer (Community Partnerships Lead), and Jo MacDonald from Hays connected with more than 120 rangatahi, many from the South Auckland communities we serve. We shared the potential career opportunities at Citycare Property and how these roles contribute to local communities.

The LSV Programme is a free, six‑week residential course run by the NZ Defence Force and Ministry of Social Development NZ. It helps young people aged 18 to 24 build confidence, discipline, teamwork and practical skills that support their next steps into training or employment.

A highlight of the day was meeting Paratene, whose father Tim has been part of our mowing team for more than two and a half years. Paratene is keen to work with us when the opportunity arises and is incredibly proud of his dad.
