And that’s a wrap!
In March 2020 Ceres NZ started the demolition works of the former Cadbury Factory and Wilsons Block in Dunedin to make way for the New Dunedin Hospital Inpatients and Outpatients buildings.
One of the biggest demolition jobs ever in New Zealand
To the amazing Ceres NZ team, Director of Operations, Project Managers, Site Managers, Demolition Manager the demolition crews, the asbestos crews, office staff labour hire, and our great subbies March Construction, Geeves, Scope, Cut n Core, Titan Cranes, New Zealand Heritage Properties and many more we had on the job thank you for helping get this massive job over the line.
Demolition started with the old Cadbury warehouse making way for site offices and set up. Crews of guys and girls started with the internal strip out of the Cadburys building and surrounding buildings where we salvaged and recycled 86% of all demolition waste. There was extensive asbestos removal throughout both Cadburys and the Wilsons block along with lead paint removal.
The smaller buildings within the centre of the Cadburys site were demolished and a large crane pad constructed making way for the 250T crawler crane to help with the cut and crane of the top half of the building. They worked alongside the guys and girls who were sitting on top of the building breaking out the floors with 20T excavators. The high reach excavator was then used to bring down the rest of the building while the crew on the ground were processing concrete and steel.
The processed concrete from the Cadbury Building was saved and was used for the piling platform.
Excavation and ground works started first with the Outpatients site and then moving over to the Inpatients site. There were 78 x BDST piles driven on the Outpatients site with a staggering 324 x BDST piles driven on the Inpatients site. On the Inpatients site there was a total of 6056.97 m of steel pipe driven into the ground, there were 235,491 blows to place all the piles, 2047.9m3 of concrete poured into the piles and 1019m of welds.
The first of the demolition started in March of 2020 and the last pile was concreted on the 26th September 2024 in this time we have maintained an impressive safety record with no Lost Time Injuries. The supervision and skill set of our entire team, and camaraderie of everyone on site made this an amazing project to be a part of.
Thank you from all of Ceres NZ
