Managing Grass Grub Infestations

Grass grubs, during their larval stage, emerge as the offspring of native Bronze (or Brown) Beetles. They represent a significant menace as they feed on the roots of plants and lawns. These larvae are most active from mid-spring to mid-summer and can cause substantial harm to lawns, gardens, and potted plants. In New Zealand, they have gained notoriety as one of the most devastating pests in pastures, posing a substantial challenge to the agricultural sector.

Adult beetles have a natural inclination towards light. It's a common sight to observe bronze beetles buzzing around streetlights in the months of October and November. If your outdoor lighting is in close proximity to your lawn, it's a wise step to either switch it off during spring or reduce its usage to minimize the risk of attracting these pests.

A clear indicator of a grass grub infestation is the emergence of brown, lifeless patches on your lawn. These patches can be easily lifted or rolled up, resembling a carpet. If your well-watered garden plants or potted plants are withering, even when they receive sufficient hydration, this could also indicate the presence of grubs at work.
