Winter usually means two things:
❄️ Longer showers
❄️ Bigger power bills

Hot water can make up a surprisingly large chunk of your household energy costs. A few small changes can help keep those bills under control without sacrificing warm showers 🚿

Here are a few plumber-approved tips:

✅ Fix dripping hot taps. Even a small drip can waste a surprising amount of heated water over time.
✅ Lower your shower time by just 2–3 minutes (your power bill will thank you).
✅ Insulate exposed hot water pipes. This helps reduce heat loss before the water even reaches your tap.
✅ Check your hot water cylinder temperature. Too hot = wasted energy. Too low = not enough hot water. There’s a sweet spot.
✅ Upgrade older systems. Older hot water cylinders often work much harder (and cost more) than modern systems.
✅ Wash clothes in cold water where possible. A simple switch that can reduce energy use significantly.

Not a bad view for the team in Twizel recently!

Ian snapped these sunrise photos while onsite in Twizel… although he DID say the last morning on the job it was the only fine weather they’d seen the whole time they’d been in the Mackenzie District 😅

Early starts, frosty mornings and long drives are all part of the job… but moments like this make it pretty hard to complain.
