Northwood Wetlands | Christchurch, NZ

A multi-functional landscape transforming 2.3 hectares into an integrated wetland system — delivering stormwater treatment, flood mitigation, and ecological value for Ryman Healthcare’s Northwood Retirement Village.

Sullivan + Wall Landscapes collaborated closely with engineers, council, and Ryman to design a resilient, responsive, and culturally respectful space that supports the ecological function of the Styx River (Pūharakekenui).

Key features include dual wetland cells, engineered embankments, and indigenous planting zones tailored to hydrology and habitat needs.

An example of infrastructure meeting environment, culture, and community.

Beattie Residence — A Sculptural Retreat in the Garden

Designed by our Senior Landscape Architect Margaret Beattie, this refined garden is both a sanctuary and a statement — a tranquil retreat viewed from within the home and experienced more intimately from its paths and deck.

Set between the formal landscape surrounding the home and the informal native areas beyond, the garden acts as a transitional bridge — blending structure with softness and guiding the eye outward into the wider property.

At its centre, a cantilevered Garapa timber deck appears to float above a dark-finished concrete pond. Rising from the still water, a sculptural anodised steel cube anchors the space, offering a bold visual counterpoint to the surrounding planting.

The garden’s elegance is underpinned by thoughtful detailing: a concealed sump and recirculating pump system, stainless steel submersible lighting, and cast-in ducting for water and electrical services — all seamlessly integrated to preserve the garden’s clean lines.

West Coast schist stepping stones lead visitors across the pond and into the planting beds, subtly encouraging movement through the space. Margaret’s planting palette balances texture and seasonality, featuring _Acer rubrum_ ‘Autumn Glory’, woodland anemones, fragrant hostas, and Japanese iris — offering colour, contrast, and calm throughout the year.

Anchoring the Axis

Positioned at the end of the main north–south axis,
this ceramic urn from Pottery World creates a strong visual anchor in the Village landscape.

Located on a viewing platform at the southern boundary — overlooking the Styx River — the urn marks a key destination within the site.

Its copper-toned finish was chosen to complement the brick townhouses and contrast beautifully with the rich autumn tones of the Liquidambar ‘Gumball’ standards lining the path.

More than just a feature — it draws the eye, reinforces the design language, and creates a true sense of arrival.

Linda Jones Retirement Village — Large-Scale Planting, Hamilton

This large bank planting project was designed in 2020 during New Zealand’s Covid-19 lockdown, with a clear purpose: to soften the built environment and enhance the village’s connection to the stunning Waikato River.

Planting began in June 2020, and all plants were procured through our nationwide network of nurseries to ensure the highest quality, consistency, and suitability for long-term success.

📸 2020 – Freshly planted.

📸 Early 2023 – Developing structure and depth.

📸 December 2024 – lush, and thriving

This project reflects what we value most — thoughtful design, careful plant selection, and long-term landscape performance.

Designing landscapes for retirement villages goes beyond aesthetics; it’s about creating functional and restorative spaces that enhance the wellbeing of residents while meeting the technical requirements of large-scale developments.

During recent visit to Keith Park in Hobsonville, Auckland, we observed that the upper North Island was experiencing an extremely dry spell resulting in some of the lawn areas browning off. This situation highlighted the importance of our approach to landscape design.

At SWL, we carefully select plant species that:

▪️ Flourish in New Zealand’s conditions to ensure long-term sustainability.

▪️ Are low-maintenance and resilient, making them ideal for large-scale construction projects.

▪️ Provide sensory appeal and seasonal interest, creating a calming and engaging environment for residents all year round.

With our expertise, we bridge the gap between practicality and experience, delivering landscapes that benefit both developers and communities even in challenging conditions.
