Lucerne 🌿
We often get asked why our Lucerne hay cost more then our standard meadow/native grass hay.
Lucerne hay costs more than meadow hay because it takes more work to grow, has a higher food value for animals, and does not grow in all fields. It gives animals more protein and helps them grow strong.
More protein: Lucerne has much more protein and vitamins than meadow grass.
Hard to grow: It needs deep soil and careful care so weeds do not take over.
Short life: Fields of Lucerne last only a few years before farmers must replant them.
Hard to dry: The thick stems take longer to dry in the sun safely.
Baling: Baling in the scorching heat of the day does not give quality lucerne bales that we strive for, the leaf simply is too crispy and falls off, leaving stalks.
