Sometimes the job before the job is building a access.

To get a machine round the back of this place we built a ramp up the side of the garage and a track between the houses. That's before a single scoop of the actual work got done.

People see the finished wall and think that was the job. Half of it was getting something up there that could dig.

If you've got a back section you reckon is unreachable, it probably isn't. Text Bud a photo of it and he'll tell you straight - 027 464 9805, or https://www.littletonne.co.nz/

Do you need consent for a retaining wall in Dunedin?

Depends on three things. How tall it is, what it's holding back, and whether your section sits on land the council has flagged for slips.

That last one catches people out. Plenty of Dunedin sections sit on hazard land and the owners have no idea until they start asking questions.

We've put the whole thing in plain English on our website. The consent rules, the hazard-land trap, why drainage decides whether a wall lasts, what actually drives the price, and how to tell if the wall you've already got is in trouble.

Save this one for when you need it, or send it to someone staring at a leaning wall.

Before and after - two days apart.

First shot is the boxing and the mesh, up on a hill above the harbour. Second is the finished pad, with the view thrown in for free. The third pick, the narrow, steep stairs the team carried buckets up, to fill the boxing.

Between those two photos: boxing set to level, mesh up on chairs so the steel sits in the middle of the slab instead of down on the dirt, and a pour where every load had to come up the section by hand.

Mesh on chairs is the boring detail that decides everything. Steel lying on the ground does nothing at all. Steel in the middle of the concrete is what stops the slab cracking in ten years.

Thinking about a pad, a patio or a driveway? Have a read of the Concrete page on littletonne.co.nz, ( https://www.littletonne.co.nz/concrete-dunedin ) then give Bud a call - 027 464 9805

MYSTERY!!!... We were repairing cobblestones for the council when the ground told us something was wrong.

A hole had opened up underneath the stones. Not a washout, not a broken pipe. We dug it out and found the answer - old tree pits. Trees taken out years ago, the pits filled in and covered over, and the roots left in the ground. Those roots rotted away and left a void under the surface.

You'd never know walking over it. The cobbles look solid right up until they aren't.

That's the part of this work people don't see. Anyone can lift stones and lay them back down. Working out why the ground moved, and fixing that first, is the difference between a repair that lasts and one you do again next winter.

HOW DO YOU GET A DIGGER UP THERE???
Easy! ... tricky difficult access jobs are what we love to do. After a major slip where the top of the section landed on the back doorstep, we moved a huge amount of soil, built an engineered retaining wall to keep it where it should be. Along with some drainage work and tidying up the side of the house the site is looking amazing and ready for some summer grass growth.

TOUGH JOBS!!! This one is done...
Many buckets, many steps, magnificent result, magical view.
Steep, tight, narrow, loose, long β€” whatever the access, we specialise in the graft everyone else dodges (or doesn't answer the phone call from you after the first site visit). This was a good workout for the team and boy was it worth it for that outlook.

Tough Job??? Two pads on this one. One at ground level and one on top of the hill.

Spa pool pad at the top of the section, no way to get a truck anywhere near it. So every meter of concrete went up the steps in buckets, whole crew running it up until the job was done. No pump, all by hand.

That's the sort of job a lot of contractors look at once and don't ring back. We love them, we've got the gear and the people to get the job done quickly and on budget.
