Wrapping up the 2024/25 year, the Dunedin Prison Charitable Trust has a lot to look back on, and to look forward to!
🔨 Stage 3 restoration is well underway
The 1950s-era structures have been removed, and the Gaol’s central courtyard is now restored to its original Victorian layout. The work has really highlighted the buildings’ significant architectural features and opened up exciting possibilities for the courtyard as a performance, community and events space right in the heart of Dunedin.
🛠️ What’s next?
- Removal of intrusive grates, aluminium windows, and panelling from the gallery arches
- Remodelling entryways for direct courtyard access
- Installation of a translucent roof to weatherproof the space for a wide range of activities
👏 Our sincere thanks
We are deeply grateful to our supporters and funding partners for their ongoing generosity. Special thanks to Dunedin City Council, Salmac Asbestos Removal and Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga for your support this year.
A huge thank you to our volunteers and trustees. In particular:
- Guy Williams, our retiring Architectural Heritage Adviser, who has contributed to the Gaol since 2009. In recognition of his invaluable work, Guy has been awarded life membership.
- Gordon Broome, our dedicated volunteer guide, whose efforts have significantly boosted tour numbers this year.
- 2024/2025 Trustees - Virginia Nicholls, Norcombe Barker, Barry Timmings, Lindsay Hall, Jane Adams, Mark Cubitt, Emily Jane Wheeldon, Linda Marchant and Teresa Fogarty.
