Hi everyone! I thought it was important to come on here today to talk about something that has been a big problem this year: FRYSTRIKE!
I have been handing a lot of this lately, and many farmers are complaining about it this year. The weather seems to be perfect for it, and even shorn sheep are getting affected.
Vetent reckons that 1.3-2.3 million sheep are affected by flystrike each year, and at least 250,000 lambs die from flystrike each year. That is a big loss!! They also said that the recovery time after the treatment can take up to 6 weeks.
When you add up the price for the treatment and the recovery time, it becomes an expensive problem. Therefore, preventing this problem is a major priority, and having the ability to diagnose and treat the problem sooner than later is imperative, I want to share some articles that tell you how to look for the problem, what product to use and how to use them the correct way.
To prevent the problem you can use a non-chemical control and a chemical control.
The non-chemical is shearing, crutching, tail docking, reduction of dags and genetics (select replacements based on dag scores, fleece rot and breech cove, for example).
The chemical control can be done with a different range of chemicals, but if not used correctly, it can cause resistence or a waste of time and money. Therefore, please read carefully the directions of use before application.

"Signs in sheep include irritation (stomping, rubbing or biting the affected area), shade seeking, depression, and lack of appetite. Rapid weight loss occurs once maggots establish, and reproductive performance can also be impacted." -Fly Control in Sheep

Hello everyone! I hope you all had an amazing time during Christmas and New year!
Today I would like to talk about fasting sheep prior to shearing.
Lots of people still unsure about the idea of leaving their sheep with no food or water through the night (at least 12 hours). I understand it can be a concern, but I am here to help!!
The links below will take you to the good practice guideline for fasting sheep prior shearing, posted by New Zealand Government, and Practical Considerations for Best Practice during Shearing in the UK, written by Marie Prebble.
https://www.worksafe.govt.nz/topic-and-industry/agriculture/working-with-animals/working-with-sheep/fasting-of-sheep-prior-to-shearing-gpg/

https://www.nationalsheep.org.uk/workspace/ng-pdfs/final-practical-considerations-for-shearing-in-the-uk.pdf

I hope it can bring you comfort when getting your animals ready for shearing 😁!

"It is widely acknowledged amongst the shearing community that fasted ewes sit more comfortably and thus struggle less whilst being shorn. It would be sensible to conduct trials in the UK in order provide more than just anecdotal evidence to support this point. The amount a sheep struggles dquring shearing has huge implications for animal welfare and exerts extra physical loading on the shearer. The job of shearing should be done as efficiently as possible to minimise stress on the sheep."
"Evidence summarised in Figure 3 found that fasting ewes with lambs at foot for 24-30 hours has no impact on lamb growth rates or weaning weights. Fasting ewes during mid-pregnancy for 24-30 hours has no detrimental effect on ewe performance, lamb birth weight, or newborn lamb survival. These
trials also showed that 12-24 hours off feed for weaned lambs eliminates gut fill but has no negative impact on growth rates or carcass weight, which is an important consideration if shearing lambs."

We've had Lucas giving us a hand in the yards while weaning. A few more years until he's on the payroll though.
