Hi everyone! I thought it was important to come on here today to talk about something that has been a big problem this year: FRYSTRIKE!
I have been handing a lot of this lately, and many farmers are complaining about it this year. The weather seems to be perfect for it, and even shorn sheep are getting affected.
Vetent reckons that 1.3-2.3 million sheep are affected by flystrike each year, and at least 250,000 lambs die from flystrike each year. That is a big loss!! They also said that the recovery time after the treatment can take up to 6 weeks.
When you add up the price for the treatment and the recovery time, it becomes an expensive problem. Therefore, preventing this problem is a major priority, and having the ability to diagnose and treat the problem sooner than later is imperative, I want to share some articles that tell you how to look for the problem, what product to use and how to use them the correct way.
To prevent the problem you can use a non-chemical control and a chemical control.
The non-chemical is shearing, crutching, tail docking, reduction of dags and genetics (select replacements based on dag scores, fleece rot and breech cove, for example).
The chemical control can be done with a different range of chemicals, but if not used correctly, it can cause resistence or a waste of time and money. Therefore, please read carefully the directions of use before application.
"Signs in sheep include irritation (stomping, rubbing or biting the affected area), shade seeking, depression, and lack of appetite. Rapid weight loss occurs once maggots establish, and reproductive performance can also be impacted." -Fly Control in Sheep
