Health NZ – Waitaha Canterbury has issued a health warning after potentially toxic blue-green algae (planktonic cyanobacteria) was found in Lake Hood.

**4pm Update: pretty short and sweet update for now - From NZTA - A tree had come down on SH79 Geraldine, between Connolly Street and McKenzie St. It is blocking both lanes, contractors and FENZ are there now cutting up the tree and clearing the road. Should be open soon.

Hi Folks, bit of an update (10am)

The regional state of emergency is still in place due to the red wind warning over the whole of Canterbury.

The forecasts are still saying we could see wind gusts up to 130 km/h in coastal areas and 150 km/h in inland areas.

Here is some key information:

⚠️Yesterday we made the call to suspend the Thursday Bin Service due to high winds, we can confirm we now have arrangements to have these collected on Saturday. Make sure to have your bins out before 6am on Saturday.

⚠️We have closed the Timaru Botanic Gardens and the Scenic Reserve to both vehicles and pedestrians.

⚠️ We are asking people to stay out of our parks and reserves during this time as there is a risk of serious injury from falling branches and trees.

⚠️Alpine Energy has warned there is a risk of power outages and is asking people to plan accordingly by securing outdoor items that have the potential to be blown away. You can keep eye on power outages on the network: https://www.alpineenergy.co.nz/customers/outages

⚠️Please avoid non-essential travel. If you must travel be prepared for strong winds, fallen trees and other unexpected hazards.

⚠️Our roading team are out and about checking on the network for those that need it for essential travel. Any local roading interruptions will be published here: www.timaru.govt.nz/roadupdates

🔺 RED WIND WARNING – MID–SOUTH CANTERBURY 🔺

Over the last 24 hours local fire crews have worked tirelessly responding to calls involving vegetation fires, downed trees, and downed powerlines, but the work is set to continue. The MetService have issued a rare 🔺 red wind warning for the Mid-South Canterbury region, with expected peak wind gusts of up to 150kph in exposed areas. Winds will build Thursday morning and ease back late Thursday afternoon/evening.

What You Need To Know💨

📍 Be aware trees may have loosened during the high winds over the
last few days.

📍 If you come across downed powerlines DO NOT appoach.
Treat them as live and call 111.

📍 Be ready for power outages.

📍 Drown, stir, and check old burn piles.

📍 Secure trampolines, outdoor furniture, and anything that could blow
away.

❌ DO NOT light outdoor fires or burn rubbish — conditions are
extremely high risk and embers can start new fires
kilometres away.

If at any time you, your family, and/or your property are at risk, immediately call 111.
