Looks great in a photo. Works a little differently in real life. 🌿

When you’re planning an outdoor dining area, it’s easy to measure the table and think, yep, that’ll fit.

But a table isn’t just a table once you start using it.

Chairs get pulled out. People sit down. Someone needs to walk past. And suddenly that generous-looking space feels surprisingly tight.

A simple test before you commit to the size: set it up as you would actually use it and see how it feels to move around it.

It’s a small thing, but getting the space around your furniture right can make a big difference to how comfortable and usable your outdoor area is.

And if you're planning a new outdoor space, think about how you’ll use it first - then build around that. Those little everyday movements will tell you a lot more about your layout than staring at a plan ever will.

🌿We built a show garden. You chose it. 💚

What a weekend at the ! We were very excited to be part of the Landscape Design Awards this year, building a show garden in collaboration with Landscape Designer, Siobhan Keating from - and what a bonus to come away with the People’s Choice Award. 🏅

This garden is a showcase of two skill sets, detailed design and skilled craftsmanship, and what can be created when the two work together.

When those two things come together seamlessly, the result is better for it.

A huge thanks to Siobhan for trusting us with her design and for being such a great collaborator throughout the whole process, and to Graeme & Simon who put in the hard yards to bring it all together. Thanks also to our team who kept the wheels turning at Groundcover HQ for the show week and to the guys who helped to take it all down again after the show!

We loved chatting with so many of you over the weekend, hearing what you liked, answering questions, talking gardens and landscaping… and catching up with plenty of familiar faces and past clients along the way.

It’s easy to forget where we started. Just grass. Everything you see in these photos - the trees, plants, bricks, timber, paths, edging, structures, pots and all the finishing details - was brought in and built on site to create the finished garden you saw at the Show. A lot had to happen in a very short space of time! Huge thanks to all the suppliers who helped make it possible.

To everyone who voted for our garden in the People’s Choice Award - thank you! There’s something very special about having the people who walked through the garden choose it as their favourite.

We’ll be sharing more about the garden, the build and the collaboration soon - there’s so much more to tell!

🏠 Completed Project: Already a beautiful home. Now it works even better.

This Cambridge home didn’t need a complete overhaul. It already looked great.

What it needed was a few thoughtful additions to make the outdoor spaces feel more connected, more finished - and much more useful.

🔨 We extended the existing composite deck to bring it right out to the pergola, creating a much bigger space to actually live in. New paving now gives easy access around the sides of the house, while crisp mowing strips frame the back lawn and make keeping everything tidy a whole lot easier.

🌿 The new front gardens add another layer of greenery and welcome, and a Corten steel raised garden in a sunny spot is all ready for planting.

🌈 And with the louvre pergola plumbing sorted, the whole space is set up to be enjoyed properly.

Nothing overdone. Just a series of additions that have taken a home that was already looking good and made the outdoor spaces feel complete.

That’s often the difference a good landscaping job makes — not changing everything, just making what’s already there work better.

What if the garden of the future is not defined by what is new, but what is considered?

We are working in collaboration with Siobhan from https://www.skgardensnz.com/ for her entry in the Landscape Design awards at the Waikato Home & Garden show, this garden explores longevity - through enduring materials, resilient planting and thoughtful restraint.

This garden is a showcase of two skill sets, detailed design and skill craftsmanship and what can be created when the two work together.

We are so excited to be helping Siobhan with her entry and we will be sharing the journey as the garden comes to life over the next few days.

We recently had the privilege of completing this very special memorial garden at Taitua Arboretum for Hamilton City Council, on behalf of the Mortimer family, to commemorate John and Bunny Mortimer - the founders of this very special place,

Graeme, Paul & Jan attended the official opening and met the Mortimer family - how impressive to have all 9 children, plus other family in attendance.
Hearing their stories really cemented what a special project this was for us to be involved in.

We’re incredibly proud to have played a small part in honouring the Mortimer family and the remarkable legacy they created here.

If you know Becki, you’ll know just how real this fight has been!

For more than two and a half years, Becki has faced cancer with extraordinary strength, energy, positivity and, of course, her unmistakable sense of humour. Through more than 46 rounds of chemotherapy, sepsis, operations, scans, scopes, PICC lines and countless difficult days, she has continued to fight with everything she has.Sadly, the fight is not over.

The chemotherapy is no longer working, and the cancer has progressed into other organs. Becki is now facing the possibility of a clinical trial and costly self-funded treatment as the next options available to her, or she lives out her remaining time making memories with those she loves.
