Rethinking wintering in Canterbury.

At our Culverden Composting Barn Roadshow stop, John Faulkner shared why he moved away from a traditional crop-based wintering system and what he’s learned through the first season with the barn.

The conversation covered cow comfort, calving, feed, bedding management, environmental pressure and the flexibility the barn now gives the farm when conditions turn.

We were also joined by Murray Coates from the West Coast, who added his perspective after several seasons running two composting barns of his own.

That meant farmers on the day got to hear both sides of the journey:

what the first season looks like, and what you learn once you’ve been running the system for a few years.

Murray shared practical lessons around bedding management, screening fines, managing moisture and using the barns year-round, including through wet conditions and summer heat.

And when John was asked what he’d change if he did it again?
“Build it bigger.”

Great to see the growing conversation around dairy housing and the role it can play in improving whole-farm efficiency. 🐄

A fresh look inside our newly completed Taranaki composting barn 👀🐄

Featured as part of the Aztech Composting Barn Roadshow last month, this impressive build measures 86m long x 45.5m wide, creating a purpose-built space designed around cow comfort, bedding management, airflow and efficient day to day farm operations.

Now complete, it’s great to see the scale of the barn from the inside and the finished building coming into its own.

Another composting barn built to give farmers greater control, flexibility and resilience through changing conditions.

We haven’t mucked out our barn since we built it over three years ago???? 😳🫣🐄 It’s not as questionable as you think and there is a good reason for it! We’ve been asked about the bedding in the composting barn a few times now so thought it was a good opportunity to talk through how the composting barn works! Aztech Buildings

A new purpose-built calving barn taking shape for Cloverlea Farms 🐄

At 37.5m long x 16m wide, this build is all about making calving season that little bit easier, with a sheltered, practical space that supports better monitoring, animal welfare and day-to-day management for the farm team.

Another dairy infrastructure build designed around how the farm actually operates, now and into the future.

Five stops. Roughly 4,000km travelled. Hundreds of farmers, rural professionals and industry partners through the doors of working composting barns.

That’s a wrap on Inside the Barn: The Aztech Composting Barn Roadshow.

Over the past few weeks, our team and partners have travelled from Waikato to Taranaki, Dannevirke, Culverden and Invercargill, bringing farmers together on farm to see composting barns in action and hear directly from the people running them.

The questions we heard were exactly the questions farmers should be asking.

Cost. Bedding. Tilling. Maintenance. Cow comfort. Wintering. Feeding. Production. Environmental considerations. Long-term farm planning. How it works day to day. What farmers would do again. What they would do differently.

A huge thank you to our host farmers for opening their farms and sharing their stories so generously.

Thank you to everyone who came along, asked questions, compared notes and helped make this roadshow such a valuable few weeks for the dairy sector.

We’ll be sharing more from the roadshow over the coming weeks, including farmer stories, key learnings, common questions and practical insights from inside the barns.

A few moments from Dannevirke at Waka Dairies as we head into the final week of the Aztech Buildings Composting Barn Roadshow.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve travelled the country opening the doors to working composting barns and bringing farmers together to see, ask questions and hear directly from those already operating them.

The response has been incredible, with plenty of practical conversations around barn design, management, animal performance and what farmers have learnt along the way.

Now, there’s just one stop left.
