Huge thank you to Carlos, Donald and Xavier from the amazing and fantastic Laser Electrical Hastings, who gave up their day to test and tag a load of donated electricals for us. It's skilled work and adds to their training and knowledg while making a significant difference to what we can safely pass on.
Here's the hard part: only half of the items passed. For a small, hard-working charity, that's a tough result. Every item that fails still costs us time, handling and space we don't have to spare.
So a gentle reminder: Re-Source isn't an opshop. We don't put donations on a shelf and hope someone picks them up. We conscientiously match every item to a referral we have received from a front line service, so it goes straight to a new home where there is a genuine need. When you donate, please have a think about condition and safety first. Good, working items mean we can get straight on with matching them to where they're needed, rather than sorting out what can't be used.
Yes, we do take some items that can be repurposed into new assets but they each need a dedicated programme with people, space and an end user in place, ready to receive the items. Electrical items just do not fall into this category. Please email us if you are wondering if something can be repurposed. We would love to talk about the possibilities.
You can also make use of the wonderful repair cafes in Hastings and Napier, where, for only a koha, you may be able to have items repaired. Our work supporting the community means our time is already stretched super thin and we carefully manage our workload so we can be as effective as possible. This is just not a task we can take on for you.
Thank you again to the Laser Electrical team for helping us do this properly. The chaps were lovely and super on to it and we very grateful to be moving forward again.
Re-Source: More Impact. Less Waste. π
With grateful thanks to Hastings District Council - Te Kaunihera Δ-Rohe o Heretaunga for the Waste Minimisation Grant that made this project sustainable into the long term.
